2010 MS3 shifting sounds

You've got me...i've contributed what I can to this mystery. The more I obsess about stuff the more flustered and anxious I get. Not gonna let this get the best of me. If anyone else can pitch in i'd like to hear it, but otherwise i'll wait for the TSB in a few years.

Sounds to me like motor mount issues. Every mazdaspeed 3 / 6 has the same problem. Practicing your shifting will help alleviate this. Turn the A/C off and shift while feathering the clutch nice and smoothly. If the problem goes away then its your motor mount.

Vater, I've heard this sound near the rear of the car on hard acceleration also. It may just be the exhaust system hitting something. I'm going to throw a set of our urethane exhaust hangers on and see if it happens again. The dull thud may be indicative of the exhaust hitting one of the surfaces covered by the multi layer aluminum heat shields.

Either that or it's a muffled afterfire. My has a downpipe and a racepipe on it right now, so that's what I was initially chalking it up to.

Stavesacre, if it is coming from the front it certainly could be a rear motor mount. This is the rear motor mount stock, how our urethane motor mount inserts work and then how the mount behaves when it's shored up with the thicker thrust surfaces that the inserts provide.

thanks for the advice and link jason. I'm blown away how much friggin slack there is in the stock mounts. It's something I actually might be doing after seeing that. Why would they leave it so loose from the factory?!?!

I had a feeling that it was something to do with the shifter or possible linkage but wasn't sure. Reguardless, the reason I said that i'm not gonna worry is because of this very thought....the reason I bought a car new instead of used (lil more then I was lookin to spend) was because I didn't wanna have to put up with repairs, troubleshooting and odd tranny/engine problems. Given that, i'm still not gonna worry. It's just a Mazda to me, and my daily driver :)

Thanks for the help so far guys. This group has been nothing short of awesome since i've been here!

Thanks Jason. Yeah, I'm bone stock, so aftermarket stuff isn't causing it. I'm not too worried about it since it seems it's a fairly common noise, but it would be nice to know why it happens...and why it's so intermittent.

It could still be the exhaust hitting the underside of the vehicle. Especially if there's a lot of engine movement.

eh, after having gotten used to hearing it for almost 1500 miles now, it's a normal operating sound. Thus, it's starting to fade into the background and you don't notice it much at all.

Just as with almost everything else that is brought to your attention, it bothers you for awhile but once you get used to it, you barely even notice it unless you're looking for it. For me, i've moved on past it. Unless you wanna give yourself a never-ending headache, i'd suggest you try to do the same.

Anyone check their cars to try and correlate if only the older 2010's are clunking?

Just checked mine. Date on the car is 06/09. Pretty early for a 2010 model...

Lets hear some other birthdates. Make sure to mention if you're hearing the clunks or not.

Door sticker on the inner side of the drivers door B-pillar.

Sticker looks like this:

Mine's 05/09, and while I've heard the noise, I think I can probably count the number of times I've heard it on one hand. And I'm pushing 6000 miles.

Ok, thanks. That's what I thought. But this pic cannot be your MS3 sticker because it says 07/05. Or am I misunderstanding something?

Your right, that wasn't my sticker. It was just what came up once i searched it out on google to find a picture to illustrate it. I'm too lazy to physically get out and take a picture of it.

Mine's 05/09, and while I've heard the noise, I think I can probably count the number of times I've heard it on one hand. And I'm pushing 6000 miles.

guess that shoots down the whole early-makes only theory. How can something so obvious be so hit-or-miss on a make?? It just baffles me.

Any others out there with dates they wanna throw in?

Well, I was wondering about this also. I hear the sound on my 2010 MS3 with 230miles on it. I have already talked to Mazda about getting aftermarket mounts and they said it would void the warranty. So I guess just turn the radio up until it finally breaks and have it fixed under warranty.
