2009 Mazda 3 SP25 - Fuel dramas.

As stated i have a 2009 Mazda 3 SP25. It's been a great car since the day i bought it, up until recently. I can't tell you exactly how long this has been going on, but its been at least 12 months.

Having a 60L fuel tank, i use to get approx 700Km's from a tank of fuel. Now-a-days, I'm lucky if i make 500Km's!
At first i thought it was a fuel efficiency problem, maybe the car was using more fuel than normal. But then i noticed it was only taking 45L from the petrol light coming on, to fill up. Basic maths says that there is 15L left in the tank! Thats almost a quarter! I understand there is an amount of unusable fuel, but surely not this much!

I asked my local dealer to have a look for me, and they quickly palmed me off saying its a fuel filter problem (seeing as the fuel filter in due in 6000km's). I don't agree as a blocked fuel filter would decrease the amount of fuel entering the engine, providing a better fuel efficiency, but poor engine performance. (The car is performing the same as it ever has).

My parents own a 2011 Mazda 3 Sp25, and after chatting to them, they fit 40L in with a quarter tank left. This figure seems a lot more reasonable and expected from the car.

I'm under the impression i have an indication problem, but thought i would ask on here to see if anyone could share some more light on the situation.

Cheers in advance!
