The Genesis concept is the first preview of the "future architecture and design of a rear-wheel drive premium sports sedan scheduled to grace the Hyundai's lineup in 2008," the release says.

The Genesis concept is formed around a rear-wheel-drive architecture, a first for an American-market Hyundai. With a weight distribution of 53:47, a new "Tau" V-8 engine with more than 300 horsepower and a six-speed automatic transmission, Hyundai says the Genesis will accelerate to 60 mph in less than 6.0 seconds and will reach a top speed of 130 mph.

Hyundai hints that the new Tau engine could spawn other versions: larger or smaller displacements are possible, as is "forced induction." Other technology - including hybrid versions - are hinted.

Stability control and side airbags are designed into the Genesis concept car, and are virtually guaranteed for the production version, since Hyundai fits the safety hardware to its Azera sedan. The Genesis concept, in fact, sports eight airbags. Hyundai promises better body rigidity than the BMW 5-Series and the Mercedes-Benz E-Class.

While branded a concept, the Genesis is unusually finished. And Hyundai is already talking pricing on the new vehicle, hinting even more loudly that the Genesis will enter production in a form close to its concept shape. Features integrated into the concept car design include high-intensity discharge headlamps, Bluetooth, HD Radio, active cruise control, and a navigation system.

John Krafcik, vice president, Product Development and Strategic Planning, Hyundai Motor America, said in a release. "With Genesis, we've got a unique product position," says Hyundai's product VP John Krafcik, "an all-new, highly capable, rear-wheel drive platform; a high-performance powertrain; and premium, progressive design - all at a price starting well under $30,000."

I was thinking it looks like Acura TL, Infiniti M, and Lexus GS all rolled into one car.

hyundai has come a looooong way. My friend has had an Excel, a 1st gen Accent, and a 1st gen Tiburon and each model got exponetially better. My friend now has the 6-cylinder Sonata and while it is bland looking, it is pretty damn fast and handles well for what it is. I would be nice for them to stop ripping off other cars style cues, but their best looking cars look like other cars and thier ugly cars they came up with on thier own. This is a great looking car with a V-8 that is sub 30g. With this, a restyled Sonata, and Tibu with some balls and RWD, Hyundai could really turn their name around to be on par with its japanese rivals, and make the USA the worst country to buy a car from. I'm sad that I even typed that(notcool)

c-pillar and upper crease on the door screams 02-06 Altima to me

looks schnazzy though. I wouldn't be embarassed to be seen in that at all :)

Oh yea it does. The G35 sedan has a similar crease too.

wow thats a nice looking hyundai.... find myself sayin that more and more often...??? i think i need to go to the doctors.

probably the best looking hyundai to date.. that isn't saying much, but it looks like progress is being made.

Hyundai or not...That's an attractive car with classic specs...V8 and RWD!

Nice work Hyundai (thumb)

If GM, FORD and CHEVY don't get their act together, not only will Toyota be stomping all over them, Hyundai will eat their lunch too. They have made HUGE leaps in terms of design, quality and brand cachet. There are actually 2 or 4 hyundais I would not mind owning and both neighbors on either side of me just bough hyundai minivans.

and IMHO this is the best looking Hyundai to date. Everytime I drive past the dealership I REALLY consider taking a test drive. But I want my next car to have over 200 horses so its a nono for me. But it looks dang good in the burnt orange or blue and the price is VERY nice too. I'm expecting BIG things from the next tiburon.

That is a slick looking car that has shades of Camry, BMW 5-series and BMW 7-series all over it. Not to mention that it will be cheap, have great specs, and have an outstanding warranty.

Apart from the name, I like it.

slap on a supercharger and it's a whole nother monster.. (headbang)

Thats the truth. There are some BAAAAD Sugercharged Tiburons running aroung out there. Solid block too. Hyundai is really making a big push i nthe United States.

They've come from "I wouldnt touch that with a 10 foot pole" to "hmmm maybe we should really cross shop that sonata with the camry and accord"

Not a bad machine.

But one thing...a japanese v8 that makes 300hp? Isn't that a little on the weak side?
