Well heres how it all started....

I was goofing off on craigslist a year and some change ago and came across a Turbo P5 that didn't run. It was $2500! I just couldn't gather the money for the car so I had to turn a blind eye and try to forget the great deal that I had seen. Well yet again I was goofing off on craigslist and I found the car for sale again. It was January 1, 2009. I called the guy about it and he was anxious for me to come look at it. I went and looked at the car and he knew nothing about it. The first thing I saw under the hood was 2 secondary injectors in the charge pipes right before the throttle body. I asked what kind of management was on the car and he said "None." I asked him many more questions and he really just boiled it down to, "It's a 5 speed mazda thats fast." Well I bargained with him and bought the car for $2,000. He originally told me that the car had 64,000 miles on it. I was a little suspicious of this.. Well after I payed for the car he came back to me and said that the mileage wasn't 64,000 miles.... It was 47,000 miles... I was in shock! haha

The car hibernated for 3 years beside this guys home with a nearly devastated bottom end.

I found the original owner of the car and this car was the Wagner motorsports test bed car. This car had the First ever wagner motorsports turbo kit.

Well I got the car home and couldn't have been any happier about my new toy. It had a terrible case of rod knock and was in need of a motor. I bought a motor and trans from a MP3 for $500. The MP3 swap had 64,000 miles on it.

I then sold off the Wagner turbo kit for $1600. I then had the car as a N/A dd for a few months and then I started piecing together a Mazda Speed turbo kit.

I made my own Fmic kit for the car. Lucky I have had good practice at making Fmic kits for protege's. I have already made 3. Plus numerous others for other cars.

* Sorry I know that the pictures are lame. I needed a wider personal budget to get a new camera.

I had some initial problems with getting the car running. I had some problems with it breaking up in boost and hitting fuel cut. At one point in my trip down I stopped to get gas and was letting the car run and cool down and I heard some wicked hissing.

Turns out I had a vacuums leak. That fixed my breaking up problem and the fuel cut wasn't as bad. At this point she was running like a top.

Time to see what shes got!

AutoX!!

Sadly I couldn't fit in any nice performance tires into my budget so all I had were Ventus all season monsters! lol The car was very pushy but despite that it did pretty well for street tires.

Drag!!

Again I had lame tires pulling me down the track but I was very happy with what the car did. I am no drag racer so I am guessing with a well practiced driver the car could have gone faster. But it was unusually hot this year and the car began to heat soak off and on.

My 1st pass was a 15.3 @ 91 mph
My 2nd pass was a 15.3 @ 96 mph
My 3rd and last run was a 15.2 @ 92 mph

The car had ridiculous wheel hop and was hitting fuel cut in every gear at 5500 rpms. So I would run it through the gear hit fuel cut and shift to the next gear. I tried to stay in it after hitting fuel cut but my car wasnt going to have any of that.(burn)

So I was kinda disappointed about the fuel cut deal, but to be honest I just don't care. I almost didn't make it (twice) this year and I had a blast. So I am more then happy with my results.

I received 30th place over all. I couldn't be any happier, I had a great time and met quite a few friendly racers out there.

Over all that's the rough story of my protege. There is a lot more to it but some I am forgetting and some has just temporarily slipped my mind.

Thanks, sadly the car came with AWR front and rear mounts. I have stock side mounts though. I think that's the real problem. My stock side mounts are pretty upset looking.

WOw...awesome story congrats on the find and bringing it back to life....does it still have rod knock?

edit- I fail at reading

Thanks, the car no longer has rod knock. I installed a low mileage mp3 motor that I bought from forum member 323.

Congrats, dude! It was nice to meet you down there. Loved the car. :)

Wow what a steal on the price that you picked it up for.

BTW window weld should fix those side mounts and fit nicely into the budget. And a heads up for the drag racing next time, stay out of the waterbox if you can when running treaded tires, water sits in the tread and will drip down creating traction problems off the line.

Thanks Kevin it was great to finally see your masterfully marveled build and great to meet a fellow P5'r.

Shadow102 thanks for the wet box tip. I think I may buy awr mount inserts, and or try and find a second set of mounts from the junk yard and fill them in. Sadly I will not be running the P5 next year. Although I am starting another project! muahahah(laugh)

Kevin I should be seeing you again next year! Are your running the Tracer again? or is it time for a new toy?
