I searched to see if I could make sense of some other threads with similar questions, but I didn't quite get an answer.
I recently moved to California from Boston. Apparently in CA, Autozone will not read your codes for you
. Anyway, about a month ago I had my oil changed and then about 2 weeks ago I had my smog test in order to go register my car here. Two days before I went to the DMV my CEL went on. I am thinking that during one of those two things something went wrong. The two codes are P0171 & P0455. I read up on what those codes mean, but I guess I'm asking based on those two things I had done, is there a way to narrow down what the problem may actually be? I am REALLY tight on money right now, so I need to be able to keep the costs of fixing the issue down. I figure if I can direct the diagnostic tests to a specific part, it may save me money? Also, is it ok to be driving around in the meantime even if I can't fix anything for a few weeks or will I be causing things to become much worse?
I checked my gas cap and it is not loose. The only thing I've noticed is that when I'm idling at a light, my car revs a bit and shudders? Sorry for the lack of technical speech. Also, is there anything I can do/check that someone with no knowledge of cars (aside from knowing how to change a tire!) can do first? I don't have a trusted mechanic yet out here otherwise I'd take my car right in to at least get estimates/answers. Thanks!
