2007 Mazda3 2.0, Oil Dipstick - Inaccurate?

I've owned my 2007 Mazda 3 (with 2.0) for a little less than 2 months.

Prior to buying it, I've always owned cars where I've performed my own routine maintenance, including oil changes.

So, right after I bought the car, I checked the oil. It seemed to be way overfilled. I went to the Mazda dealer, and was told the dipstick used makes it look overfilled, but it was really not. Skeptical of this, I went to an oil change place, and had them remove about 1/3 of a quart. The car still showed as overfilled per the dipstick, but less overfilled.

After putting 700 miles on the car, with gentle driving to allow the motor to settle properly, I had the oil+filter changed (not at a Mazda dealer). The techs really struggled to read the dipstick. They said it looked overfilled, but since they put in the correct amount (4.5 quarts), they said they did not want to change it. I agreed.

After getting home, I tried inserting the oil dipstick not all the way in ... like one inch less than being completely in ... and tada ... suddenly it did not look overfilled.

My question is ... is it possible the original oil dipstick was cut to the wrong length? Or maybe they just put the wrong dipstick in my car?

Suggestions/Comments?
