2006 DVD navigation upgrade?

Have any of you wondered about upgrading your DVD navigation disk?
Any idea if mazda sells upgrade disks and how much?
Im also curious if anyone has thought about making a "backup" copy of their disk.....

I know that Honda provides it's own little online store for upgrading navigation DVD's... https://iweb.alpine-usa.com/Hondadvdsales/naviorder.php Looks like they charge about $200 for an upgrade. I couldn't find a similar site for Mazda, although I'm sure they offer the same service for updated roads, points of interest, etc. I'd personally not worry about it for at least 5 years or so, unless you live in a particularly quickly developing are with new roads/developments popping up everywhere.

As far as burning a backup copy, hmmm, I never even thought of that. It SHOULDN'T have a problem being ripped, but I'd be scared of ruining it somehow, because then, yah, you need to drop whatever to replace it. I guess I don't see the point in that since it's always in the nav player, it really doesn't have a chance at getting damaged.

Best thing to do is just contact your dealership and ask, I'm sure they have the answer you're looking for.

The link to the website is http://www.navteq.com/index.html (the NAV software OEM, not Mazda). They updated the Mazda 3 disks, but not the 5. There was some discussion as to the possible use of the 3's disk in the 5. No word on if anyone bought them. The $150 price seems familiar, though I could be wrong.

Mazda Does send its owners new nav updated discs but really they are every couple of years in most cases....

If I remember correctly, the first Nav discs that came out did not show locations newer than two years prior to the discs being issued. In other words it takes two years to compile the data for a Nav disc so places, addresses, etc. newer than two years will not be on it. Also, different companies may be the suppliers for Mazda3 and Mazda5 Navs.

About making copies: the CD players on Mazda Protegs and the first Mazda3s would play commercial CDs, but they would not play home-ripped CDs. I would think Nav DVDs are copy-protected by manufacturers to protect proprietary data and trade secrets. If you try a DVD from a MZ3 and it gets stuck in the player don't be surprised.

I've been using my Nav to find all sorts of things. My family lives all throughout So Cal and we're always using it to find the nearest ATM's, restaurants, Ski resorts...(for those of you who have used the voice commands, you know what im talking about)My biggest problem is that my disk seems so out of date already. I noticed in the gallery on the mazda website that the nav main menu looks diff this year (at least it does in the picture). Any idea if the 2007's are using a newer disk?

Actually I don't worry about DVD nav upgrades. It doesn't exist as an option for us Canadian buyers!

funny thing was the day i got my car i was showing my co-workers the voice command feature. For some damn reason it didnt understand Zoom In...
i tried 3 or 4 times then my friend with a hard core Mexican accent tried...
"Zoom eeen" and it worked. hAhaha it was pretty funny to say the least.

My tl which is suppose to have one of the best navs around has problems with voice command.
Its like an old comedy show. I tell the nav one thing, and instead it switches the radio station or makes a telephone call, or switches from a/c to max heat.
I am laughing all the time. I will tell me car to switch to a radio station and instead it turns a dvd on. I repeat it and it does something else, like it purposely trying to piss me off.
By the way, where does the maz 5 keep the nav dvd. In the tl its in the trunk, and basically a new dvd come out every year.
