2002 Miata Vs MP3.... what are you thoughts

OK well I got myself a new challenge this week, it will probably go down next weekend. I received a challenge from a guy that owns a 2002 miata.

His car is stock, mine is only intake.... we are going to do some 1/4 mile pulls.

Anyone race a miata lately... cause I want to know if I should be spending a little cash now to make myself a win here... I really dont' want to be schooled by this guy in front of this club cause I will never hear the end of it.....

This guy has been totally talking smack against me and s***. Even though he is a fellow Mazda owner and I tried being cool with him, he decides to continue this feud..... here are my options for my mods....

1-UDP

2-Cat back exhaust 2.25 inches.... removing the second cat and resonator and keeping the muffler....

and whatever else you can think of....

Honestly, can't say I've driven or raced any miata. What's the 0-60 and 1/4 mile @ stock anyhow? Does he have mods?

I'd say at 142 hp, and under 2400 lbs, you'll get your ass kicked...at least in theory.

on another note. I did get to sit in a 2002 Special Edition, yellow miata. Very small. But, has anyone noticed anything familiar? Like the peddles, and steering wheel? Even things like mats, emblems on doors etc

Well looking at a performance site www.autosite.com , it didn't have any 0 - 60 times for the 2002 but if it's similar to the 2001 then you are looking at about 7.9 seconds 0-60 and a 1/4 mile of around 16 even or a tad more for the Miata.

So the Miata is a bit faster on paper...so actually it sounds like it should be a pretty close race and should come down to the driver.

Well dude, If the driver is a 300 lb fat guy then I think you have nothing to worry about! But I think this is highly unlikely given that they will be driving a Miata.

On a seperate and less offending note: Syzgy, Where did you get your seat covers? my wife has a yellow P5 and those look choice!! Hell they wouldn't look bad in my MP3!

I have both a 99 Miata and an MP3. The Miata is faster in a straight line from a stop than the MP3. The 99 Miata with a six speed transmission has a 0-60 time of like 7.6 sec while the MP3 is like 8.5 sec from the same source. Having said that, if the other guy misses a shift or is slow off the start you could win. I won't count on it. Never develop a plan that relies on your opponent making mistakes to win.

Really I wouldn't worry about any mods, just remove ALL the stuff from the trunk like jack, spare tire, system (if you have one) stuff like that. Maybe even take out the back seat, its not that hard, just the bottom part. Depends on how bad you want to beat him

I would focus more on how your gonna drive than anything else.
"You gotta visualize the win" but whatever you do...DON'T RACE FOR PINKS! hehe.

Dude i don't know if you can take a miata or not but the 99-++6-speed miata's are quick. If all you have is a Cai, i think your gonna need quite a bit of mods to beat him say like a cat-backexhaust, header's, new plugs/wires, pulley's and some intake/exhaust cams. I think you could take it with all the mods but just Cai hmmm like Dolphin said if he slips then you might have a chance. But good luck...and here's some info i found

I don't think the Mp3 would lose to the miata with all the mods i listed, that's better than just an Cai or Cai and cat-back. the Miata runs what an Civic Si would do or better. But adding big performance parts helps such as, Pulley's, intake/exhaust cams, and header. that there should help the Mp3 which he already has a Cai system which is even better for throttle response. if he just races with Cai system then i doubt there's a chance but with the mods i listed i think he would win. IMO

Also the Miata is RWD. t will have an advantage in traction off the line cause when the weight shifts back due to acceleration it will put more weight on the rear wheels, increasing traction.

A good trick with FWD cars is to install adjustable shocks. Set the rear as hard as you can. That way the rear end doesn't squat as much and you get better traction on the front. You can pick up a tenth or two ust from that

Only way to beat him would be outdrive him. Get a good hole shot (hard with the factory clutch) and out shift him. If you can, powershift. If you have not powershifted before don't try it. Also race as short as you can. The MP3 has good accleration dow low, but lacks top end power. I can burn alot of cars off the line but by middle to end of 2nd they come back.

Once you have them, buy a pair of embroidered patches from cmack98 to cover up the lame default embroidery. The MP5 stickers I have on mine in the pics are homemade and pretty lame, as well.

My honest opinion ~~ The Miata will spank ya all day long. Especially a newer one. They are so light, and they are really quick. A buddy has a 98 that is lightly modded (Intake,, exhaust, ignition system, pulleys) with no interanal mods. The car gets up and goes pretty fast, and I have tried in my P5, but it is all in vain. I know that the MP3 is a little faster than my P5, but all his mods may make 15 HP, and he gets me by 4 car lenghts every time.
