2000 Protege with thrust bearing problem

Hi, I am new to the site.

I am the owner of a 2000 Mazda Protege with 38,000 miles that without warning developed a problem with the thrust bearings. They failed causing major problems with my engine.

I have read where the Miata in 1999 had thrust bearing problems, but I have not found anything regarding other models.

My mechanic said that this should not have happen and I am trying to get Mazda to at least take a look at my problem, without success so far.

Can anyone help or reference me to a site for this information? Thanks

As long as the problem is with the power train mazda has obligation to live up to there warranty. Or else you take legal procedures against them.

Welcome to the US...where Mazda North America Operations in Irvine, CA, only warranties Mazdas for 3yrs / 60,000 miles. Only recently did they extend it to 4yrs.

Mazda Canada however warranties Mazdas (excepting those POS Mazdas built by FoMoCo...the B-series and Tribute) for 5yrs / 100,000 km (60,000 miles).

Sadly, as his car is a 2000...there is no more warranty.

As to the problem with some 1999 Miatas...different engine...the 1.8L in the Miata is the BP motor, which hasn't been in the Protete since 1998. The 1999-2003 Protege either has the B6 series 1.6L or a FS series 1.8L (increased to 2.0L for 2001-2003). Guess you're SOL.

Additionally, perhaps a moderator should move this posting to the 3rd Gen Protege section here: http://www.msprotege.com/vbb230/forumdisplay.php?f=44 as it would be more applicable there.
