2000 Mazda Protege ES
So be warned I don't know about a ton about cars.

I have a 2000 mazda protege not in the best shape. The previous owner did not take care of it so well. I put some money into fixing it and cleaned the exterior up. I made the mistake last winter of getting it stuck in the snow and I overheated it. I turned the key repeatedly and it would not start. I was confused, unsure, and took it to a mechanic. He told me I had no compression in 3 cylinders and his shop was filled with smoke. He told me he had to tow it back so it sat for about a year and a half. Now fast forward.

I had a friend help me and we changed the oil and filter. We started the car up and it appears to run fine. The trick is initially I had to turn the key about 15 times to get it to start, but once it cranked it acts normal. The issue is getting it to crank, it does not delay once it begins to crank. I've found out that if I turn the key (the dash lights up) and hold it then after 2-3 seconds the car starts every time.

My not necessarily informed opinion is that I need to replace the ignition switch. It was never a problem before and I don't know how it could be related now, but it's all I can think of. So I come to you gentleman to ask. If I turn the key all the way and the dash lights up but there is no sound whatsoever for 3-4 seconds before the car cranks and starts. What is it?
