200 whp with a side-mount?

I'm wondering if it would be cost effective to use a side-mount intercooler instead of a fmic in achieving a goal of 200 whp. I'm converting my ES engine to an upgraded version of the MSP setup. I looked around a little bit but only saw numbers on the stock smic, usually around 180 @ 10 psi. Has anyone with an aftermarket smic like Turboses gotten to 200 with other supporting mods? I'll have aluminum hardpipes, s-pipe back exhaust, injen cai, hks bov, msp ecu and the accuboost mbc.

thats what i am going for. actually 250 with a SMIC setup and full exhuast. it will be a slow process for me to get there becuase i will probably have to upgrade internals too. but i will get there.

this week i am buying
hard pipes, RS BOV, CAI, oil pressure, AF, and Boost guages, 3 A-pillar pod, Oil Catch.

next will be full exhuast system, SMIC when they become available again, Greddy Profec B spec II.

then internals!!!!!!

good luck

Anything is possible If you apply yourself towasrds it. The only thing I can see is heat soak with a SMIC.

it's been done. in fact, Import Racer magazine got to about 210 with a downpipe-back (s-pipe back) exhaust, circut sport smic (no hard pipes), an intake, and about 9psi. i think with your mods you'll be well on your way. i would suspect that better motor mounts and a better clutch than stock would help greatly also.

Protosport acheved 210 whp with:

SMIC
catless downpipe
10 psi
intake
flash

i have CircuitSport (protosport) SMIC in my car.
i put it in 2 weeks ago.
I LOVE IT, my car drives like a totally different beast.
hesitation is GONE.....not less, but GONE.
spoolup is quiker, turkey is madder, +1psi.

dont have the pipes yet.
i'll get them as funds allow.
stock pipes were pressure tested to 25 psi.

for 200whp i would definately think a SMIC is the way to go (and i own a front mount)

with a SMIC, a GOOD exhaust and dsm a/f controller your pretty much there. I doubt you would even need a boost controller depending on how high your stock boost is. Mine was 6, so when i added the exhaust it went up to 8. my fmic did not increase the level for some reason, but people with SMICs are reporting an additional 1-2psi as stock boost so that should put you around 9-10 psi stock just from improving the flow of combustion. 9-10 doesnt sounds like much, and on an MSP without good supporting mods like a aftermarket SMIC and exhaust 9-10 psi isnt very much, but in your case I think you will be quite happy with it since you will have the mods. For reliability you may want to look into a methenol injection kit. It will help keep detonation away and will keep the ECU from pulling timing. It also steam cleans the motor so you do not get as much carbon buildup. I run 1/4 methenol in my mix, 3/4 water. (since meth works as additional fuel, it will make the car run too rich if you put too much in. This is also cured by turning up the boost even more, but then the motor will start breaking apart around 220-250whp.) If you are 100% sure you dont want to exceed 200whp then you may want to look into getting flashed. I figure I may go higher so i left my ECU as is.

I would be willing to bet my car is around 200whp right now without a boost controller. I won't get it dynoed until summer, but I will dyno it then before I start the rebuild to see how much HP I got without upping the boost. Looking at the channel size of the TH intercooler, I am going to use it for between 15-18 psi when I'm done.

look into custommsp's SMIC if you are seriously looking. i have one of the first few and i LOVE it. his dyno numbers are showing around 22whp with intake and exhaust @10psi i believe. here is a link, http://www.msprotege.com/forum/showthread.php?t=84443 . it's a fairly easy process and doesn't take too much time. i haven't had a chance to dyno my car but it pulls much harder than before. hesitation is almost gone, exhaust is my bottleneck now. all i have is an intake. i saving for a turbo back, hardpipes with bov, and a boost controller. i wanna run 10psi and see what i get HP wise. it's $465 shipped, so the price is right and it's good up to 260HP. look into it and tell Custom i sent you if you make a decision. anyways, i know you can safely get 200whp with an SMIC and a few other supporting mods, ie; exhaust/downpipe and intake, and maybe a little more boost.

u can get +22whp with MBC alone set at 10 psi.
every psi is arround 10-12 hp.

with SMIC, intake, exhaust, 10 psi u're looking at somewhere arround 50 whp.

stock msp dynoes arround 153.

That 20whp difference is actually between just the stock and the aftermarket IC. Everything else was the same on the dyno. With an otherwise stock MSP the WHP will probably be more like 10-15whp at most

oh i see what u ment.
sorry i missunderstood.
yeah, that's right.

Thanks for all the help, I figured it would be possible. 200 whp is all I'll probably be able to afford to get to on a college budget, since I figure the only next step is fuel management and built bottom end. It should be plenty fast, being twice what my ES currently has. A SMIC is also great for the sleeper look, especially in an ES.

One other question...think the more narrow grill that ES's have will significantly hamper air flow to the intercooler?

I have custom msps smic, and I thought about the bumper blocking flow.
Not an issue. No heatsoak and you get to stay low key. Definitely the best purchase I have made for the MSP. The price is great too.

yes and so much easier to install then my fmic..didn't have to mess with the bumper or anything ..I was pretty impressed at how the car pulled with the mods he has too ....and there you go talking about low key again Mr. Bright A$$ Yellow Car hahahah (thumb)
