2003.5 Mazdaspeed Protege
I'm looking to forge out my engine for my 2003.5 MsP, but financially it's gonna have to be done over time. Because of this I wanna try and find one in a junk yard or something similar since I'm gonna have it resurfaced and bored out anyways.

My question is what else was this motor in so I know what all vehicles to search for.

Q1: What engines can I use for a direct swap/replacement?
A1:

Any FS 2.0L from a 2001-03 Protege or Protege5, manual or automatic does not matter, you're swapping the engine not the transmisson, the flywheel and clutch will bolt up to the crank of the donor engine, just keep all your manual parts and pieces to swap over
1993-1997 MX6/Probe and 2.0L FS engines are available but not recommended because the cranks are not forged, and you will have to take it apart to transfer parts over, and high mileage on these engines.
1993-2002 626 also have 2.0L FS engines but only the 2000-2002 blocks should be used, some 99s depending on the production date. The difference is the crank was reported to be forged in the later year models

I'm not too worried about the mileage because I plan to take everything out of it and resurface and replace pretty much everything anyways-as long as nothing is cracked or majorly wrong with it is what I'll be looking for. The earlier models don't have forged cranks, but later model engines do then? That was 1 thing i was hoping to not replace-just get the balance checked and such...

Good luck sir. In the process of having my.motor built. Bored .020 over to reveal a crack in cylinder 4. Frick!

under the hood of my car. Same one that kept sending the plugs and coils of cylinder 4 in to orbit

Another thing to look for in the junk yard is that it says FS9 on the head and block

Thanks, my biggest worry is finding out that whatever motor I get ends up being cracked. I know I'm not gonna be able to do it all up all at once though and I really don't want my car to be down for another long period of time. Just got it back up and driving after a few months when I ran into problems with my turbo setup (just in time for the nice weather here!!) So I'll prolly look around and see what I can find for how much and hope its sound.

Gotta ask though-what's the significance of the FS9?

Im assuming that it is like a lot# my engine # says fs9 so does the one I found in the junkyard off a 2002 protege now I have seen probe engines with fs6 molded on them. Also when I look up heads for this car on ebay they ask if its a fs9

Try looking up 2.0 Mazda head on ebay toil see fs9 and actually fs2 the difference I don't know just thinking its a lot #

Could be we know for sure that the crank is differnt from what I read but that is the extent of my knowledge as far as specifics go..

Hi I found a 2000 fs-de Jen 626 engine with fs9 and was wondering if this would swap into my 2003.5 MSP if all I used was the block and head.

As far as I'm understanding-I believe so...
If anyone agrees or knows for sure yes-or-no that knowledge would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks for pointing that out-I completely overlooked that...
You know of anywhere I could order one?
