I started it as normal, then when it was shifted into gear a loud squeal, louder than any belt noise, was heard in R,N,F,1&2. Noise went completely away when I put it back in park! I shut down, looked around under hood, serpentine belt looked fine. I checked AT fluid level - it was full and light brown and had a fairly strong odor that was not a burnt smell, more like an ozone smell. Started the car again and this time it shifted into gear quietly so I gingerly drove it home 3 miles. Still OK but I am freaked out by the squealing episode. Any ideas, suggestions, troubleshooting tips at all would be appreciated! I'm in Florida with 70 degree days now. Car never garaged, lots of exposure to elements, especially humidity. Time to sell?

I've been inside several different automatics and can't think of anything that could possibly squeal. Maybe howl or rub or grind but not squeal. Check your belts and pulleys over real good, maybe you have an idler or a/c clutch trying to lock up on you.

It'd be handy to have one of those mechanics stethoscopes to pinpoint the noise when it happens, again. As Jetski recommended, make sure none of your engine's belts are loose. A failing pulley bearing can screech, intermittently, as well. I don't think it's anything serious, so don't sell your car!

I would bet you anything it was just a belt. Engine load changed and the belt squeeled. Probably the alternator belt because the p/s belt would have sqeeled when you turned.

It remains a mystery because it has not returned in 10 subsequent start/drive cycles. The reason I suspect the transmission is it quieted completely when put back in park with engine still running and it had a metallic sound, not a rubber squeak. AC was off, no burning rubber smell or loose belt.
But thanks for the input.
