That looks pretty wicked! Hope you can get some action shots of your P5 in the rally.

    Another Protege5 thread

For your cruise control buttons, I'm assuming you have the three spoke steering wheel with the three buttons on the right hand side. If so, you'll need to remove the air bag and then you should be able to get to the switch and remove it. The bolts for the airbag are behind the steering wheel...

Guide Found a successful Drive Cycle formula!

In that exact order, yes, has been my experience. However, I've sometimes had to pause in between each step because of traffic or road conditions but I've done it all in that one drive. I've driven more time that what the cycle recommends (by a few minutes), once again because of traffic and...

That's what I ended up doing to mine but I like Kiwi's idea up there.

What happens when the timing belt breaks or skips? 1998 Mazda 323

More than likely your timing belt broke hence why you don't have compression. Take off your timing cover and see if the belt is torn.

What happens when the timing belt breaks or skips? 1998 Mazda 323

The 1.8L is a non-interference engine so no bent valves or broken cogs if your timing belt broke. Is it not starting?

    LankyKiwi's Rally-flavored SP20

I ran into an electrical gremlin years ago where my car would suddenly shut off without rhyme or reason. I couldn't track down what it was but it felt like it was cutting out electrically. I decided to run extra grounds from the battery, to the block, and back to the other side of the engine...

Fresh Sweet Donuts Everywhere! (work log)

Nice to see an MSP still running. My Protege is still running (and passes safety inspection) though I wonder back and forth if I should sell it. Every time I think I'm ready, I don't have the heart. Too many good memories with that car. I hear ya on being a dad and not having time. Even...

Any 450 to 500hp Mazdaspeed proteges out there?

I bet several of us wish we could resurrect several old threads along with our Proteges.

Just realized the other day that my Protege is 21yrs old... jeez... it'll almost be considered a classic! I still have my Mazdas247 hoodie put away. I've debated on and off about selling the Protege for over a year now but once I think I'm ready to sell it, I take it for a drive and I change...

    2000 Protege LX sleeper?

LOL! I'm still here and I still have the Protege but it needs a lot of TLC. Life got in the way and such. Thought about selling it, almost convinced myself to do it but... couldn't follow through. My cousin is slowly going to help me bring it back up to snuff mechanically. He's a Mazda fan...

    2000 Protege LX sleeper?

If you were looking to swap the MSP engine into your 1.6L Protege, it would be best to swap the whole driveline as you'd need the transmission, axles, and hubs. Our 1.6L are 4lug and MSPs are 5 lugs.

    2000 Protege LX sleeper?

The best benefit I ever saw from a chip was the removal of my speed governor on a 1997 Ford Escort I had years ago. Didn't ever see much benefit beyond that.

    2000 Protege LX sleeper?

I have 2001 Protege with the 1.6L (about 98hp) but good suspension work and good tires make it blast to drive in the twisties. With enough money, you can build a 300hp Protege, but that would just be an exercise in engineering. I agree with getting a Speed Protege as at least you start at a...

2000 Protege 1.6L Manual - Rough Idle and no power until reaches 170F

Have you cleaned out your EGR valve? Not saying that this is the smoking gun you're looking for but I remember my 1.6L running rough when the EGR was dirty.
