    EGR idle help

If the coolant line was plugged, you would either replace the little coolant hoses going to the throttle body, or run a stiff wire brush through them. Avoid putting your lips on the hose. I see you are in Canada. Have you ever replaced the EGR valve? If so, you should replace it with a...

    Time to replace driveshaft?

Road Noise Troubleshooting I have been getting a terrible thumping sound from the front end while driving: the sound increases in speed with vehicle speed. I have figured this out and would like to share my results. Because of the rhythmic nature of the noise consistent with vehicle speed, I...

    Time to replace driveshaft?

Time to replace driveshaft? (Road Noise Troubleshooting) *SOLVED* *Please see second post for solution* 01 Protege LX (2.0) Question: can anyone tell me whether the driver's side driveshaft (the single shaft, not the joint shaft) is supposed to be "loose" at one of the boots? I removed the...

Slightly Erratic Idle upon Cold Start

Hi all. 01 Protege LX 2.0 used to rev right up to 2000 rpm on a cold start, then slowly, smoothly, and surely idle down to 750 as the car warmed up. Recently, however, the idle has been a bit erratic. Going to 2000, then 1000, then 1500, and not very smooth. It's not terribly rough, and...

RED HOT CAT & P0300 (random misfire)

So I changed the coil packs, boots, and wires, and boy is my face red. :o I'll hang on to the EGR for a couple of days after it arrives, just to be sure. If the problem doesn't return, I'll be returning it. (flash) It was nice to put the bike to good use, though.

RED HOT CAT & P0300 (random misfire)

The stalling and "rich" CEL flash returned today. I've been reading several posts and threads from various sources, and I think I've found a lead. Upon reading this thread http://www.mazdas247.com/forum/showthread.php?123732861-Canadian-EGR-valve-exposed I realized that this stall usually...

RED HOT CAT & P0300 (random misfire)

Arrived at work this morning and smelling that odor again... like melting plastic. It was the odor I smelled when the first cat glowed red hot. I'm hoping it's the new welds burning, but maybe I should ride the bike to work until those new coils arrive. Car is idling a bit low, about 675-700...

RED HOT CAT & P0300 (random misfire)

Replaced the cat and she's running well. Engine threw a P0135 after the replacement, but I cleaned and tightened the O2 sensor connection a couple of times until it went away. I have not driven the car enough yet to see if it throws a P0421. I would like to get an exhaust gas readout done to...

RED HOT CAT & P0300 (random misfire)

Is it wiser to get the OEM coil packs, or are there any aftermarket brands that are worth looking into?

RED HOT CAT & P0300 (random misfire)

I just ordered a direct-fit, NY-legal, Walker cat. The coil packs resistance values are within spec. The coil springs, however, had only a "1" resistance value until I cleaned them, which is why I suspect them and the plugs. Usually the misfire occurs only AFTER the car throws the P0421 code...

RED HOT CAT & P0300 (random misfire)

Yes, for sure the upper cat is bad. There is a hole in the honeycomb. I heard that a rich condition causes too much raw gas to go inside it and heat up the cat. I am going to replace it. My question is, is it possible for the bad cat itself to cause the misfire and/or rich condition? Perhaps...

RED HOT CAT & P0300 (random misfire)

My cat was glowing red hot today. I have a misfire and a rich condition indicated by a P0300 and blinking check engine light. Would a broken cat (hole in the honeycomb) cause a rich condition? I know the cat is damaged, but am not sure whether something else isn't causing the problem. I have a...

    Protege High Mileage Club

2001 Protege LX 2.0 just under 189k I blew a head gasket once due to mild overheating. Milled the head, replaced gasket, replaced timing belt, replaced all other gaskets, cleaned intake manifold, cleaned IAC, cleaned everything else, and she runs absolutely great: perfect idle, starts every...

Head gasket, valve seals, timing belt change = car won't start, help!

150 inch pounds is 12.5 foot pounds. The head is supposed to be torqued down to between 13 and 16.5 foot pounds. Since my torque wrench only goes to 150 inch pounds, I simply went a little higher on the wrench than is specified. I realize the wrench loses accuracy after 150, but the dial...
