Losing Oil, Low Power, Rich Fuel?

I haven't tried seafoam yet, I only just discovered the carbon on my last visit. I should probably try it before using the water method. Although the old-school guys swear the water method is the most effective. Here's some Indian dudes actually catching expelled carbon deposits from the exhaust...

Losing Oil, Low Power, Rich Fuel?

A "me gauge"? A new gauge? A new gauge is the plan, although I won't be able to look at it until Thurs. I'll also borrow a leakdown tester and see what it says, although last time I used one (different vehicle), I got crazy results too... I see a pattern emerging. And yes, I'd expect to see oil...

Losing Oil, Low Power, Rich Fuel?

Yep, you're right. It's pretty high. Either my gauge is off, or I've got some carbon buildup. When I look through the spark holes, the piston heads do seem pretty dirty. Not sure why a 3 day mmo soak would leave so much buildup. Looks like I'm not one of those 'worked for me' mmo stories...

Losing Oil, Low Power, Rich Fuel?

Took a little while to get the test going. Had to reassemble the engine just a bit. Compression test results: # : dry / wet 1: 225 / 260 2: 230 / 260 3: 237 / 252 4: 223 / 265 This is my first compression test, but those look okay to me. Fairly consistent and above 200. I find it odd that...

Losing Oil, Low Power, Rich Fuel?

I took the timing cover off today and looked all around the motor for leaks, but there is nothing. It's dry as a bone. Thanks. That was the first thing I checked and replaced. It was fine, but I replaced it with a new one anyway. Rings can smoke when the engine is cold, because the rings leak...

Losing Oil, Low Power, Rich Fuel?

:( I've had a shop search for signs of a leak and they couldn't find one. It leaves no stains in the driveway. I suppose it could be a pressure sensitive leak, and only leaks when driving... although I'd expect the mechanic to find evidence of that leak... I should rev it up on ramps and see if...

Losing Oil, Low Power, Rich Fuel?

My 2002 P5 is sick. - Loses about 1/2 Quart of oil every day, or every 40 miles. (lots of oil going somewhere) - Power wanes above 3500 rpm, you can feel very small waves of power/lack-of-power as it climbs through 4-5-6k rpm. - Fuel Economy is fine, about 28-30 mpg - Whisper of black smoke in...

Protege 2.0, 1.8 (non turbo) valve stem seals replacement

The 2.0L motor in the 02 protege5 is the same as the sedan, yeah? This applies to it as well? How do you decide whether to do just the valve seals, or also send the head in for guides (and seats?)? My 02 P5 burns about a quart every other day (about 300 quarts per oil chainge...). Rings test...

    Starters won't work when installed.

Positive battery terminal. Checked the clutch switch; was fine. Tried the ground wire, no luck. Wired the solenoid +post directly to the battery +post and it cranked right up. Cleaned and reassembled the terminal clamp; no problems now.

    Starters won't work when installed.

Thanks. I'll check it. Would be very strange timing. Would the solenoid tick if the pedal deity was bad?

    Starters won't work when installed.

I think I fried something in my starter electronics by bumping the starter while in gear. -Clutch system failed; Clutch pedal rested on the floor. -Tried to move the car by 'bumping' the starter. On the first attempt, the starter just went 'tick', and continues to only 'tick' since. -AAA towed...

New P5 feels suffocated, low on top-end power? Mild pinging at low end?

Unfortunately, I was half right and half wrong all along. I do have a rattling component somewhere, although I can't locate it. I think it may be inside the cat. I also have fairly severe pinging. Higher octane gas helps, but it's still disturbing. There is also a considerable amount of...

New P5 feels suffocated, low on top-end power? Mild pinging at low end?

*hangs head in shame* There is a loose heat shield or similar. I ran it through a parking deck a few times, and I'm pretty sure it's not pinging or knocking now. I'll secure/remove the loose metal and test run it again without the rattle. I think I just get really paranoid when I buy cars...

New P5 feels suffocated, low on top-end power? Mild pinging at low end?

So you like the clogged Cat theory? I'll test it this week. One thing I noticed driving around today, the pinging seems to be intermittent. Are there scenarios that would cause detonation to be intermittent? Sometimes, I can't get it to ping, it sounds brilliant even when trying to lug the...

New P5 feels suffocated, low on top-end power? Mild pinging at low end?

Hi all, I just bought a 2002 Mazda Protege 5 (Base, I assume) yesterday. It drove really nice for a $3500 car, so I bought it, but I've noticed some odd things over the last few hours. I also drive a 1999 Protege with the 1.6 DOHC motor, and the comparison is strange. -Pinging? There is a mild...
