I cannot comment on the doors given your situation but it certainly sounds like an actuator problem somewhere in the system. The heater core does not have sides for driver and passenger, it's just one unit and the airflow directed across the core determines where the heat goes.

Are you buying the part for the shop or for DIY? If the shop is doing the work I'd let them order the part and stay out of the loop. If it's a DIY situation I find that rockauto is more accurate than most other sites.
