I just checked page 2-56 from OM and it seems that the light will only turn off if passenger's weight is normal. The light in my 2014 stays on all the time when the passenger seat is empty.

You cannot go any cheaper than hollis's solution. It looks great (in my opinion), it's practical and it's cheap (just over $6). I was considering Husky liners but they are expensive and I don't need them in Virginia. After 5 years, I can buy new carpet floor mats for half of Husky liners price.
