    Phoebegoesvroom's 2003 P5 "Scruffers"

Oh yeah, I forgot to post these pictures too. After removing the side skirt, I noticed all this debris inside the front fender: It may not look like much, but it ended up being several pounds of dirt, twigs, acorns and leaves: I have yet to check the passenger-side front fender since I...

    Phoebegoesvroom's 2003 P5 "Scruffers"

Here's the finished repair on the driver's side rocker panel: The matte paint that you can see is the Rust Encapsulator, which is fine as a topcoat or a primer, so I can topcoat this later when I have the opportunity. Internal repairs to the side skirt were done "racing style" by drilling...

    Phoebegoesvroom's 2003 P5 "Scruffers"

Just now I tried out a trick I learned about a couple of days ago. My passenger side headlight is yellow and very cloudy. The driver's side one must have been replaced because it's in great condition. Anyway, the trick is that if you apply brake fluid with a rag to the yellow, cloudy headlight...

    Phoebegoesvroom's 2003 P5 "Scruffers"

Hey guys, it's been a while since I posted, but I haven't stopped working on Scruffers. First, something minor: It's a Delrin shift knob, intended for a Miata. Although I really do like the stock shift knob, the metal plate on the top gets really hot if the car's been sitting out in the sun...

Those spray can handles really do help out a lot, especially with finger fatigue. You'll have much better control using one, and they're really cheap. You can get them at any store that carries spray paint.

Yeah, maybe one of these days I'll get myself a GLH or GLHS that's ready to go (or at least doesn't require quite so much work as this one).

Oooh la la, that's going to look awesome when you're done. The car is going to be all Milan Gray right? (cool)

In case anyone's curious, here's the process I used on the passenger-side doors. The rust on the driver's-side doors wasn't significant enough to warrant the extra work I did on the passenger-side. This should be ok now for a long time *fingers crossed*.

    Phoebegoesvroom's 2003 P5 "Scruffers"

Well, I picked up Scruffers from the shop after work yesterday. All they did was replace the front rotors. That stopped the high speed vibration I was getting while braking and/or turning to the right, so that's good. The car still vibrates a bit at higher speeds (above 75mph or so), but I'm...

    Phoebegoesvroom's 2003 P5 "Scruffers"

Rust repair on the passenger-side doors is now finished, and the door panels are finally back on. The car is so quiet now...a little too quiet if you ask me. The car is getting dropped off tonight at the shop near me to have the wheel bearings and motor mounts checked. It should be fixed...

Thanks! The wiper stalk mod is one of the easiest things you can do on these cars and is a vast improvement over the stock stalk. Plus, if you shop around for one, you should be able to find one relatively cheaply.

    Phoebegoesvroom's 2003 P5 "Scruffers"

I've been continuing with my rust repair on the car. It's been difficult lately though because the weather hasn't been cooperative, and unlike most the country, it's actually been raining very frequently here. I should be done with the passenger-side doors within the next few days so I can...

    Phoebegoesvroom's 2003 P5 "Scruffers"

Thanks. I did the same thing on my Focus shortly after I found out there was a variable intermittent stalk for it. Why Ford and Mazda didn't do this in the first place is beyond me. (Yes, cost cutting, I know...)

    Phoebegoesvroom's 2003 P5 "Scruffers"

I popped in a MPV wiper stalk last night: I got it cheaply from Ebay and it's in perfect condition. Definitely worth doing. I didn't do this yesterday, but I forgot to post these up. My P5 has rust around the windshield on the A-pillars. It doesn't seem to be really bad (at least on the...

    Phoebegoesvroom's 2003 P5 "Scruffers"

My stubby antenna arrived today and I wasted no time putting it on: I don't listen to the radio anyway, so I could care less what the reception is like. This antenna is 3" long and made of flexible rubber. I like it because it looks like it could have been a stock part, and it was cheap. After...

    Protege High Mileage Club

My 2003 Protege5, "Scruffs", has 131k miles on it, and it's the original motor. It starts up on the first try and runs and drives almost like a brand new car. No complaints (other than I think it's a little too quiet!) :)

    Phoebegoesvroom's 2003 P5 "Scruffers"

I know. I keep reminding myself that I wouldn't have bought it if I had seen it in person first. Oh well. :( I just wish I didn't have to sell it at a loss, because there's no way it will sell for what I paid for it. Then I think about the P5 and how it's a lot more practical, handles and stops...

    Phoebegoesvroom's 2003 P5 "Scruffers"

Thanks! Here's the story with the GLHS...When I was in college, I had a 1985 Omni GLH (NA). I loved that car so much and I always regretted selling it. My Focus was getting tired and I was on the lookout for another car. I saved up some money and was looking for a GLH, GLH Turbo or GLHS (Omni or...

    Phoebegoesvroom's 2003 P5 "Scruffers"

Thanks! Oh yeah I forgot one other minor thing I did on the car. The "lights on" beep wasn't working and the dome light was sporadic. I traced it to a faulty door switch in the driver's door. I just opened it up, cleaned out the corrosion with a scotch brite pad and gave it a touch of vaseline...
