I just looked at that test. After reading that and what people have mentioned so far in this thread, it appears not many people use more than a single coat.
If you haven't done so, try multiple coats. Last time I did my car, the shine was incredible. First wash the car with Dawn dishwashing liquid. Go over the car with Z-6 and a claybar (Meguiars is fine Zainos clay is a bit steep). Apply the Z-1 or ZFX followed by Z-5 (dark cars - for swirls) or Z-2. Wipe off. The next day, go over the car with Z-6 followed by another application of Z-2. Repeat the following day.
Yeah, it's a multiple day process. However, the shine will be incredible.
Personally, I wasn't too impressed with Z-5. I'd rather go over the vehicle with Meguiars #9 and then some of the finer cleaners and polishes from the Meguiars professional line. Then followed by the entire ZFX, Z-2, Z-6 routine. That usually doesn't happen. . . not enough time.
If you read up on the philosophies behind each company you'd see why I like the above method (I haven't tried Mother's but it is similar to Meguairs). Mequiars has a clean, polish, protect methodology. Cleaning takes away the build up and oxidation. Polishing nourishes the paint with oils. Protect covers the paint with a protective barrier. The Zaino system only has Dawn dishwashing liquid (removes old wax) and clay (removes contaminants) as the cleaning step. It does not have a step to nourish the paint at all. The Z-2 is a protective polish.
I only go through the ritual about once a year or two. The rest of the time, it's just a simple wash and maybe some Z-2/Z-6.
