2020 CX-5 (KF - Pre Facelift 2017-2021) Standard 6 Speaker - Door/A Pillar Mounting Locations/Dimensions

I am planning a speaker install and wanted to see if 8" door speakers might be an option with minimal fabrication (speaker rings and maybe a thick gasket).

Unfortunately I was having problems finding information about dimensions around the stock speaker mounting adapter in 2nd Gen, Non-Bose, 6 Speaker CX-5s.

So I took my driver's side door panel and a-pillar off, then took some pictures with measurements. I thought I would share the measurements and pictures here, just in case someone else goes looking for this info:

Initial Thoughts:

-An 8" speaker ring mounted to the stock 7.5" mounting flange, will only overhang by .25".

-It looks like a 1" thick speaker ring+gasket would leave an aftermarket driver pretty close to stock mounting "height", with 5" of mounting depth.

-The A-Pillar is might fit a 3" full-range with a mounting ring. Doing this, without it being ugly, is another question.

It will probably be many months before I'm ready to start buying drivers, but I'll follow-up with a new thread at that time.

A few months ago, I finally followed through on this and modified the inner door panels to fit oversized (8.75") midbasses from parts-express.

I trimmed off the flat 7.5" flange from the front using a Dremel, leaving just a 7.5" circular opening.

I made 2x 9" OD (7.5" cutout) rings from some 1/4" polycarbonate.

I attached the rings to those 7.5" openings on the inner door panels using Loctite PL ii construction adhesive. I then built up the area behind them so that the entire backside of each ring is bonded to the inner door panel.

This stuff is basically liquified polyurethane, and it dries into a hard and tough plastic that is not at all brittle.

It turned out to be very compatible with both plastics I was bonding, but I did have to build it up over 2 sessions until it met the adapter rings.

I'll post pictures this weekend, and I'm working on a more detailed write-up of the build so far including all the places I found that I could eliminate rattles in these doors using a dab of silicone caulk.
