Average MPG - 1st 1k miles on '17 CX-5 FWD Touring

I haven't reset mine for over 7000 miles and I'm averaging 28 mpg over that stretch. It was averaging around 26 for first few thousand, and has been steadily climbing since then. This is a FWD.
My 2014 lifetime average over 100,000 miles was 26.4 if I remember correctly, driving the same routes and also FWD.

I am at 3500 miles now on my 2017. I noticed that around 3000 was when my MPG started increasing on my daily commute. I reset at every fill up and the latest is showing 29.3. I'll get a better read on it this weekend, as I'll be putting over 700 miles on it in two days, mostly all interstate.

This sounds hopeful. Will be resetting my avg MPG after every fill up now.

Insist on Mazda's moly oil - change oil around 7K interval and keep that up. the moly does wonders for FE and overall is the best oil recommended on these boards. If a dealer says he has never heard of moly, just ask him how long has he been at the dealer?

Does your dealer charge you additional for OEM oil?

I noticed zero difference with it. I live in an affluent town, and the dealer barely even stocks it. Just puts it in by special request and asked me to call ahead to make sure they have some (they always did, back when I used it). Otherwise, they use synthetic Castrol. I just saw it as money wasted.

2017 AWD premium, first few thousand miles has stuck ~26.5 MPG for a mostly (~85%) freeway commute + random city weekend driving

I have a 2017 GT AWD that just turned 2500 miles. I live in Staten Island which has horrendous traffic and prior to this weekend its longest trip had been about 60 miles one way down to the NJ shore. I had been averaging 22-23 MPG per tank. This weekend I drove up to Boston from NYC and averaged 29 MPG for the trip up....and that includes five or so bumper to bumper traffic delays of appx 10 minutes each.

I have an AWD but was getting 26-28 average around town. This weekend, I drove 300 miles each way with the apative cruise set on 80. However, I had the cross bars on and two road bikes on the roof. Whoa. I was struggling to get 23 mpg. Car hit 3k miles on the way back.

Cross bars don't matter. I tried that on my Jeep Grand Cherokee w/HEMI. It got 18-19mpg doing 80 on the freeway with, or without them. Your mileage is typical depending on the wind, although the bike racks may have cost you 1-2? These cars just can't do 80 and return anywhere near EPA like other vehicles and SUV's can. At 90, I was in the low teens!

Yeah, the roof rack and bikes don't help especially as the speeds increase. I moved to a 1UP hitch and was much happier.

My FWD GT

2017 CX-5 GT FWD 5378 miles at last fill up
Average 28.04 MPG
Mixed highway and city (normal commute and errands) 27.0 MPG
All highway 31.1 MPG (with a significant amount of scatter)

I measure using the iOS app Road Trip, top off tank every time until it clicks, wait ten seconds, and then pump until it clicks again. That seems to help smooth the data and get more consistent "full" values.
