where to get CV axles? and can I use P5 ones instead? can I use an SE?

850$. thats how much the dealership wants for one new msp CV axle. and I need a new one bad. I don't really have the resources or expertise to rebuild it.

I live in canada, but pretty close to the border. so I can probably make it to an Autozone or a Napa.

whats the best way to go about this in a cost effective way? its sounding really serious.

and are the SE axles different than the P5 ones? I heard one or the other can fit.

Im pretty sure its the passenger side one that's bad but the car is at 200,000kms, so the other one should probably get done too.

There has to be a driveline shop or two, three etc up there that can rebuild your CV axles. That is the best way to go imo. You can also contact fattimsp on here to see if he has any. He's a recycler here in FL that has a lot of parts available. Other than that look in the FS section. I seriously doubt that any retailer has MSP specific axles, even if they tell you that the computer says it works. Don't risk developing a transaxle problem by having the wrong CV axles installed. Thus get yours rebuilt and you know they fit!

You can use an other Protege axle that has ABS.

Empi offers the MSP axle. And WorldPac carries them. WorldPac is a wholesaler and is HUGE in Canada, so I would imagine that they'd be available through a shop up there. Or if you wanted to Google search, the Empi part number is 80-3787 (L) and 80-3783 (R).

the MSP has specific axles to the LSD installed. the axles have oiling grooves machined into the input shaft.

every other protege will not have those oiling grooves, and will cause the diff to get extremely hot. and possibly epicly fail.

stick to either rebuilding your current axle, or finding the correct replacement. :)

GOddamn it, autozone gave me the Wong one. Oddly enough, the axle diameter is correct but the ABS ring is missing. And no, the old one won't fit.

Also, no one in the whole city can rebuild these either. So I'm still looking for a solution.

Anyone ever rebuild their own?

I just replaced a broken drivers axle from Advance auto brand new $75 31mm and it was the same number as the MSP, but they sold me the wrong one at first told them stick shift and he gave me atuo. there is a place in canada that builds custom shafts for $350 for both, I will look for the info

Success! I found a car parts store that carries Worldpac stuff! 80-3783 is definitely the right PN for the passenger side. The axle is actually 28mm in diameter, even thicker than stock! And it comes with the little cup washer that goes against the half-shaft support bearing.
