I bought a 2000 Protege for MOM it had bad doors locks, all around, upon inspection I saw that it was a plastic gear, dealer wont sell the gear by itself just the whole assembly for over $ 50 A DOOR, parta alone would have been over $ 200 bucks.

Well , I am know manufacturing the screw gear that gets broken and will be selling it on ebay or direct here . I will start having the gears here in less than 60 days.

1st 50 orders will get 4 gears for $ 40 shipped USPS 1st class mail

after that it will be 4 gears for $ 50 shipped

1 for $ 15 shipped

You're gonna need to do some stuff (You need to get authorized vendor status) in order to try and sell like this on these forums...

any progress on these? i'm sure if you got vendor status and made them out of something more solid/less fatigue-prone, the majority of us here would love you

Just replaced one of my door lock actuators, I had the exact same problem. The shaft had broken and a cheap 20 cent part from mazda ended up costing $51.

Sounds like a good idea, I still have my broken one and would like to fix it for 15 instead of getting a new one for 51.

I went down to pick-a-part this afternoon and got two worm gears. If BUSHPILOT doesn't come through, I can model it in SolidWorks, but someone else will have to take point on getting them made.

Hey is it worthwhile going in and lubing all the lock pieces ultimately moved by the gear to delay this problem? Or when it happens do you typically find that everything is moving pretty freely; the piece just naturally fatigues?

Thats a question I had as well. Would it cost more to make it out of say a lighter metal like aluminum or maybe cast aluminum? Heck even a stronger plastic. I would like to know what the material is going to be used to replace these. Also like stated, dont know if the middle plastic piece that slides would hold up to a metal gear.

I had two go out on my first Pro back in 2001 and it sucked. Good thing it was still under warranty. The problem was there, Mazda didn't find it a problem I guess.

Maybe some kind of composite material instead of the limp grade plastic there now would be huge improvement. I'd be down for a set if this ever comes about. I lean much more toward Mazda doing it to sell parts & charge for labor on top of it (for those that won't do it themselves) instead of having an actual reason that makes sense for this part to suck the way it does.
