Yes you read that right. This story is great.

How A $500 Craigslist Car Beat $400K Rally Racers

Worth reading the story above.

Some Highlights:

* $500 E30 BMW, bought off craigslist
* He built his own FIA compliant roll cage so he could spend more on tires
* He fixed a hole in his fuel tank between stages with duck tape
* He did shots with Petter Solberg
* He finished, when several big name WRC guys didn't
* He came in 3rd in his class against Rally Prepped Evo's

How cool is that?

This guy actually beat out 2 of the Teams in the real WRC class. Epic!

Trust me, I am not out to nit-pick anything...if that were the case my username would be Wagonbacker...and quoted from the site rules...

It was never meant to be an attack, but with you guys ganging up on me I figured I would post it...I mean seriously...what is the wrong in saying that someone mentioned it before...in that case, just as I do, I would delete my thread and post in the other...I don't see WTF the problem is...

Just let it go, quit trying to argue, and enjoy the forums....

I posted it here because the guy is local to those that frequent this forum (IL section). He's from Chicago, and the other link was virtually impossible to find. Matter of fact I did search before I posted. I tried a few different searches with various key words and came up blank. If you look at the thread you linked you will see that from the title and content of the post it would be impossible to find using the search function.

Thread title: Awesome story

proves that regular people can still race cars.
(got this off of clubroadster)

Nothing there to indicate what that link contains. I neither required nor desire lessons on forum posting etiquette.

Lets get this thread back on track. Does anyone know this guy? He sounds like he would be a blast to hang out with. The reason I noticed he was a local Chicago guy was if you look at the video in the linked article, then look at other videos from that guy there is one of him driving a Lotus through my favorite road in the Chicago area. The video I am referring to is of him driving through the canyon portion of Sheridan Dr. in Glen Coe. he is taking it easy in the video, but it got me interested in figuring out where he was from.

Very cool story. Reminds me of my years in SAE Mini-Baja whilst in undergrad...only about 99 gazillion times awesomer.

Last night during the cruise last night we were driving up Sheridan and we spotted this.

We pulled over to take some pictures. Jeff heard some noises coming from the garage. He knocked on the garage and low and behold Bill Caswell was in there with some of his friends building another budget racecar for the 24 Hours of which is happening as I type this @ Gingerman Raceway in MI.

What a great guy. We knocked on his garage @ 330 in the morning, when he and his friends were thrashing to get their newest "Racecar" built, and he took the time to hang out and talk to us for 15 min or so. The car they were working on for the 24 hours of lemons race was a 7 series BMW that they got from a junk yard. The previous owner of the car needed the jaws of life to get out, so they just cut the entire roof off. They were finishing up the roll cage and "custom" exhaust and welding the doors shut. Basically they ended up with a convertible four door 7 series BMW with a V12.

What an interesting night.
