Here's my dyno sheet before pullies. I had at the time, motor mounts, CAI, shorty header, magnaflow custom catback

Gosh why are all the n/a protege have no power....I think mazda just wasn't thinking about power in these vehicles...:(

he is also in colorado, and elevation will do that to an NA motor. at sea level, you could probably add 10hp to his numbers.

other than that, it looks like a decent start.

Those are corrected numbers for sea level (you don't want to know the uncorrected numbers.......... my uncorrected numbers are about 80 whp on a Dynojet). And this was on a Dyno Dynamics dyno - which is suppose to be the most accurate dyno out there and reads lower than a typical Dynojet.

i don't like the look of this dyno. lol. na protege's suck. ha. i'm kinda worried once i put this intake mani and mp3 ecu in. haha. i have the same mods. so i guess i'll be looking at 120ish. haha. roar.

another thing i don't understand is how there's cars out there that are have more hp but, i can still take them. by that i mean my buddies celica gt is so much lighter than my car and we had the same mods, and their car is rated at 130 i think and i was still taking him, as well as my buddies wolfsburg jetta stock i took him up til 3rd gear and his little snail kicked in. just a thought. i hate the thought of the numbers.

even with corrected numbers, you'll still read lower than if you were to dyno at sea level.

True, but not by much. Even at sea level you might get a correction factor if it's too hot/cold in the dyno shop at the time. The correction factor is suppose to apply standard atmosphere conditions.

So you switched out the Racing Beat cat-back for a Magnaflow? Isn't that a bit of a downgrade?

And shorty headers dont' do you any good unless you're in a state with smog testing. The first catalytic converter is your biggest bottleneck.

It's not always the ultimate number that is the telling factor. The shape of the curves are also just as important as the total numbers. For example, if your HP curve stays low and then peaks late, you might be slower than someone with a less powerful car that makes power earlier on.

And it could just be the driver too.......

Which Colorado is. But in his area they don't smog cars anymore. So really he has no excuse for this one. I have an OBX but have to switch back to the factory manifold when it comes time for inspection.

yeah i just thought about that as well. especially driver, but he's freaking amazing, but i think i get him b/c i'm pretty decent at taking off in the protege.

Yeah, I've been looking into getting a different exhaust header/midpipe combo. I know the shorty header doesn't really do anything for flow, but it sure looks sweet with the sterling ceramic coating. Also, the magnaflow and racing beat mufflers are pretty much the same, but the racing beat is a smaller diameter. I plan to go 2 1/4 inch all the way back and that's what the custom piping is. I originally had it on my 00 ES, but took it off when I sold the car.

As for the corrected/uncorrected HP. Yeah, dyno dynamics is closer to real and will read lower than others. My uncorrected (what I actually put down at 6050 feet above sea level is 77.4 Hp. RIDICULOUS! But I raced an SRT-4 at the track and had him in the 1/8th mile. I had a better reaction time and was a tenth behind him in the eigth. Then his turbo really kicked in and he whooped me by 2 seconds in the 1/4. So that could also explain why you're beating the celica/jetta.

77whp thats sad

srry guys but trust me from knowing from experience. You just can not produce any power from a n/a protege motor. Just not going to happen. Sure a few people have spent 5 grand and managed to produce 180-200whp, but lets face it, those are low numbers. N/A=waste of time

Only one person that I know of has produced N/A power between 180-200 whp. I would be willing to bet that he spent more than $5k to get there as well. But, I'll disagree with you that N/A is a waste of time. You might say that if all you wanted was high whp. But there are many N/A enthusiasts out there that want to mod their car without using forced induction.

yeh, i know i was one of those people, but then i realized after a few thousand dollars later that the n/a route was hopeless. Speaking honestly, f/i is the only way to go.

But even going to FI route you're still left with a slow car. At least with a NA set up, it's more reliable when it's slow.

I cant believe people still arent catching on.

If you want NA power you need a stand alone ems. The ecu learns around the mods, and even stock its super conservative. I've never driven a more paranoid car then the protege when it comes to any engine hickup it instantly throws out a cel. Theres something like 20 hp to be found with a custom standalone, other then that the stock parts are pretty stout.

Why has no one looked into FS-ZE parts, stock 170 hp. Its very hard to make more power when the stock parts are pretty good to begin with. Get some cam hears, the FS-ZE cams are the same as the NA ones just repinned.

People think normal IEH are going to work magic like they do on american cars, they wont but there are still other tricks that can be done for easy power.

Remember that tripoint was able to be very successful with the proteges in the SCCA challange.

^^^ you've almost got it.

the FS-ZE intake cam has higher lift, and a little more duration than the USDM FS cam. FS-ZE exhaust is exactly the same as the USDM one. Mazdaspeed japan sold a modified exhaust cam for a little more power. FS-ZE ECU, intake manifold, pistons, and some other stuff MIGHT get you up to 170hp, but at the crank - maybe 150hp at the wheels.

and yes, Sunbelt (i think) built the Speed World Challange protege motors, and they were pushing 225hp, but with MUCHO mods, very peaky power band, and they HAD to be rebuilt every other race.

FI is the way to go for less money and more power. but again, the protege FS engine needs to be reinforced to deal with FI duty, even at stock Mazdaspeed protege levels.
