Motor mounts in 31 degree weather? Sure...why not!

Last night Chris (Prodigy) and I installed the Corksport motor mount inserts and shifter bushings onto my car. It had been pretty warm that day, so i wasn't expecting the temperature to drop to 31* while we were still working on the car at 1am. The front mount and shifter bushings took about 30 min including jacking up the car. The rear consumed the next couple hours mainly because of the cold. We eventually got back to SPSU around 3.

Problems we ran into:
1. Rear motor mount was MIS-CASTED from Mazda. The bottom "gap" in the mount that the insert was supposed to slide into had rubber in it. Granted it was very thin, but it prevented the mount from going in using body strength. Only after c-clamping the mount in, did it pop that cherry.
2. After using Chris's air tools for a while, the compressor tried to kick on and refill the tanks, but because of the outside temp and the fact that it is an oiled compressor, it refused to start. Only after 10 minutes of heating the compresser block with a propane heater did it start working.
3. While removing the rear mount, Chris successfully found the black hole that is installed on every Mazda. It's exact purpose is unknown, but its effects can be seen on all Mazda models. The lack of power from the stock mazdaspeed protege, the rampant oil and gas consumption in the rx-8, and the front engine mount bolt in the new MS 3's; all of them eaten by this mysterious entity.

I'd like to publicly thank Chris for helping me out, as i would have never bought the rear insert if I had to put it in myself. As many of you know, he really know's a lot about this car and is slowly helping me learn as well.

I think my hands are still numb from the install. haha
The black hole ate one of my 17mm sockets... oh well.

You're welcome and enjoy the vibrations!

lol should have given me a call there is some tricks to getting that rear insert in. i put my g/f's rear insert in yesterday at the shop along with her short shifter only took about 45min

What he ended up doing was removing the bracket that goes between the engine and the mount. The mount never actually came out of the car. And that mis-casted rear mount was icing on the piss-off cake.

The mis-casting for the rubber is common.

How do the inserts feel compared to say...the AWR?

How about the NVH for them?

Heat was on your side! heh

The vibrations are about half as bad as my AWR's (95 duro)...
I didn't notice any bolts falling from his dash at 950rpms so thats a good sign. (thumb)

Noise level : I could barely a difference. Then again I might be deaf from the straight pipe exhaust.

Before the mounts all i have noise-wise was the Corksport exhaust. There is only a slight resonance at low RPM's or while easing off from a stop. At highway/cruising speeds (55-80) the noise level is about the same.

so what are those tricks you speak of? lol im looking to get this done soon..

first off that little bracket that goes from the mount bracket to the trans held on by two 10mm bolt can be removed and chucked you dont need it. Second remove the cross member and the shifter stabilizer. Before you put the insert in shave down an angle on the leading edge of the mounts. When putting the inserts in lube them with silicon and if you can tap them into place with a hammer. The rest is just some good ole elbow grease and lining up all the bolts

I just installed my inserts today with a buddy and it went smooth. It definately helps to use the right tools. Trying to loosen the bolts on the mount without a long enough handle on the ratchet makes it hard. I ended up getting a 14" handled ratchet. After removing the mount, we first tried to squeeze the mount back into place by leveraging the tranny with the new ratchet and a 19mm socket on one of the stuck bracket bolts on the bracket between the mount and the tranny. The bolts ened up loosening on us, which it made it a lot easier. I just removed the 2 bolts closest to the mount and rotated the bracket down and slide the mount into place.

The inserts are perfect. I was really torn on the inserts vs a new mount. I can say, no vibration change with very mild hop. I took it for a "ride" prior to install this morning and then after and it feels tight in the transmission. When I stand on it I get a "hop hop stick" instead of the typical "hop hop hop hop hop shutter backoff the gas". Also, the transmission just feels tighter now. I love it. I strongly suggest the inserts for daily drivers.
