Motegi Traklites will fit but Traklite2 will not? Is it the 'Backside' measurement?

Motegi Traklites will fit but Traklite2 will not? (Hirudin talking to himself)

I've got a question regarding the following 2 wheels...
Traklite
Traklite2
I like the look/idea/features of the Traklite2 wheel, but for some reason the Motegi website doesn't seem to think they'll fit on an MS3... The website does say the original Traklite wheels will work though.

The only difference I can see between the 17x8 Traklite (1) wheels and the 17x8 Traklite2 wheels is the "Backside" measurement. The backside on the 1s is 6-1/4 and on the 2s it's 6-1/8.

What's this "backside" thing?

Anyone have any personal experience with these wheels?

OK, I've looked into this a little more. It looks like what Motegi is calling backside is more commonly referred as "backspacing".

Backspacing is the distance from the inside edge of the wheel to the mating surface in the center of the wheel. It is directly related to the offset and the wheel width. To determine the offset: divide the wheel width by 2 then subtract the backspacing... then multiply the result by negative 1.

So, seems to me that the inner edge of the Traklite2 wheel will actually have slightly MORE clearance inside the wheel well (1/8 of an inch) compared to the Traklite wheel.

So, maybe that backspace (or 'backside') measurement wasn't the problem. Maybe it's the center bore? I've seen that the Mazdaspeed3 has a 67.1mm center bore, I wonder if the Traklite2 wheel has a 73mm center bore.

OK, more scouring of the interwebs... Found this quote from a Mazda6 forum (use google if you wanna find the original...)

alright i got the hub bore size. its 72mm. last time i checked, ours was 67.1mm right? which is better alum. or plastic
@ sl1200, what size lugs are they 12x1.5? are they acorn style? im liking the mcgard splindrive + locking ones.
thanks for the replies.

Welp, I picked them up! Some all-black teflon coated mamma-jammas! They might look a little funny on a silver MS3, but I don't care... they'll be easy to clean!

As is written on the picture, I got em from Eliteswholesale out of Cincinnati, Ohio... Included with the price was 4 centering ring things and some black spline lug nuts... not bad!

We need to start a Hirudin forum. You asked questions, answered your own questions, bought wheels, and posted pictures all in the same thread.

You're a one man show.

HAHA! I hate it when it seems that people start a thread without doing any of the legwork for themselves.

I changed the title of the thread to let people know I was just talking to myself, but the new title only shows up after opening the thread; it didn't change the link on the forum listing...

PS, your signatures are great SwampAss! The sarcasm is over the top, it's great!

One man show eh ??? well, prove them wrong hiru... how bout showin a pick of your ms3 with them rims on.... MAYBE i'll believe ya ;-).

hahaha pretty funny how it only took 7 hours to do all that... lol
I'd been shopping around quite a bit, when I found these I was like: these are the rims I've been looking for! Forged, easy to clean, super light, not too flashy (I'm scared someone's going to steal them), and not super expensive. I hope they actually go on... We'll see.

I'll definitely post a pic if/when I get em on! Maybe I'll even give the car a wash as well...

I've done it many times myself. I kid you because I know. (laugh)

Welp... Some wheels came last Thursday... The shipping was fast, but they weren't the correct rims. I got the original Traklites in black which I don't exactly want... I'm debating taking a small refund or returning them. Leaning toward returning.

what size rimsa are u running!
I knda like them myself.
I might as my friend at American Racing (owns motegi or so know) and see if i can get a set if price is good (employee price is 1 set of rims a year a 1$ over cost).
i kinda like them!
do they weigh alot. pretty light?

That backside stuff is crap, but OFFSET is far more important. With an 8" wheel, we need a lot of room, say 48mm or better. 50+ would be better still. Problem is, lots of wheels simply aren't made this way.

Put this way, if Tirerack says they'll fit (and they carry Motegi), then they will fit, but if you are just guessing wheels then I'd probably bet on them being too shallow on offset (like 40mm), and they WILL RUB!

That's an outstanding discount! If you/your buddy wants to hook a brotha up; I'm ready to order (again)! I wouldn't expect employee pricing, but if he can give a discount or something (and put something in his pocket) that would be sweet!

That eBay seller was the cheapest place I could find ($268.50 per wheel shipped), after them the lowest I can find is $298 per wheel (here: www.streetortrack.com). Even though they are still selling a set of these rims, they say they cannot deliver the set they already sold to me, fuckers!

These have an offset of 45mm. When I was picking them, I was thinking that 48mm would be fine and 45 is just 3mm less.

I'm having a lot of trouble with understanding how just a few millimeters difference in offset can make or break a wheel's figment! I'm trying to learn, but I'm still a total newbie...

I know, but trust me, even at 48mm with a 235/40-18 we rub. At least SwampAss' setup does.

If you stick with narrow rubber like stock, this doesn't happen at 48 or 45. You can also roll the fender with a quality roller, and get away with 45mm. Let us know how it turns out.

if i could use her to hook up friends i might. BUt she gets 1 set per year! thats what sucks! llol

No prob ALIEN3T! I knew it was a long shot...

OK, I think I'm convinced... I should definitely get 48mm or higher offset rims. Or plan to have a machine shop shave a few millimeters off any wheels with a too low offset...

I've re-read this thread: http://www.msprotege.com/forum/showthread.php?t=123651243; It's restored my faith that I haven't bought the absolute wrong tires... (some 235/45 17s).

Sounds like 225 on stock offset is just fine. 245 can work on the fronts, but with unknown offset. 235s in the rear rubbed a small amount, also with unknown offset.

Also in this other thread, xelderx said he has used 245/45 16s without issue during autox with a 50mm offset. Note that the final diameter is about 1" less than stock with that size tire.

...
My 235/40s rub in the rear on an 8 inch wheel w/48mm ET.
