Maxx Mazda's Haltech E6X THread

Stock P5
Well, got it working last night. Disabled the injectors, then cranked it to check with my timing light that I was getting spark. Nothing. Checked timing light on my other Protege, worked fine. So, I spent like 40 mins pondering, went in, has some food, and then remembered while I was wiring under my dash, I blew my 60A IGN KEY fuse (which I already replaced.) So, I checked the rest, and my 10A "engine" fuse was gone. Replaced it and voila. Spark galore. So, installed my STi 575's, ran the f pump to bleed out the air for abour 5 mins, rechecked all vac lines, and decided it was go time. Enabled my injectors and went for it. (Timing was locked at 15* to tune idle) Holy s*** it fired right up on the Haltech base maps. Rich as s*** with that big of an injector, but I quickly leaned it out to idle around 13-14 AFR.

Spent awhile going through each RPM (1000, 1500, 2000, 2500 etc) as per the haltech manual to get a good no load tune in there. GOt up to 6000' and called that good. Made a few small changes to post start enrichment, fuel coolant correction, etc as well.

For the time being, the stock ECU controls my idle. When hot with the a/c off it became really lopey (see thread http://www.mazdas247.com/forum/showthread.php?t=123673897 ) so I used the BAC valve screw trick to help stabilize it. It still dips from time to time, but with the screw out a bit now, not to the point where it stalls completely. I'm thinking this is more of a tune issue.

So tonight it's time for a bit of light load street tuning. My Haltech bosot controller is currently set to let everything bleed out so my 7lb WG spring will cap boost for me for the time being. Enjoy the thread! :D

Came out this morning, and realized that I had left all my interior dome lights on all night. My TT said 11.4V, so I cranked it over and car fired right up. Gotta love that Optima! :D More tuning tonight.

Did some tuning after work today. Got the idle sorted out. Just bumped my injector times up to around .8ms or so and I'm running idle ign timing around 23*. My maps are all rich as **** at the moment (never above 12:1 in boost) and my ign timing in bosot is around 18* so there is still TONS of room for improvement but that's what the dyno is for on Friday. I'm just glad I got it running.

Went out for dinner (brought laptop, ratchet and sockets and lighter for spark plugs should I flood the engine) and after supper at Tony Roma's the car started on the 3rd crank but ran rich as ****. My idle went from about 12 ish AFR this afternoon to below 9 after supper when it was cold out. I still need to mess with my air temp correction maps. But the car did start. I ripped on it before and it's got less power than it had with the AFC but its raining right now so i was easy on the gas. THat's all for tonight. It's in for a wheel alignment tomorrow aft so I should be able to get some tuning done in the meanwhile.

Has anyone played with the dwell time on the coils? Mine's set to 5ms as per Juans reccomendations but raising it to 6 or 7ms would make for a stronger spark provided you don't nuke the coils. My buddy did that on his Cobalt SS-SC. He had his dwell time up to like 12ms though lol.

Okay. This morning it was cold out (about 51*F) so I took the laptop out in the rain and hooked it up before starting. The car cranked about 4 times, but fired right up. I'm thinking my prime map might be too rich.

Anyways, did a small bit of tuning this morning, but not much to report. Got my hot idle afr's to high 12's low 13's. Found out I had a vac leak as one of my lines popped off under boost, but fixed that and all is well. Going with the girl to see Ratatouille in a bit, so I'll post more after.

Okay, after the movie, changed some things. Too many things at once to be exact. I can't remember what I changed ignition wise, but I fried my 1-4 coil. We were about a block away from my gf's house on the way to go drinking around 1am, and my car up and dies and wouldn't restart. Troubleshooted for a bit, then popped the hood and my one coil was all "bubbled up" like they do apparently... So now my dad is gonna pull a coil off my other Protege and drive it across town to me on his father's day. What a Dad...

No Dwell time was set at 5ms as per Juan. Pulled the coils off my other Protege this morning and put thme on my P5 just now. Changed the visibly cooked one first, then started it. Barely ran. Changed the other one as well and it fired right up. (I reverted my ign settings back to normal last night.) At the moment, all I changed that might have cooked the coils was I changed the spark edge to rising instead of falling. Left the dwell time at 5.0ms as before. The spark edge is basically when on the trigger pulse the coil is triggered. If you look at the square wave produced by the trigger, the 2 edges (rising and falling) are seen, but I don't see how this could have cooked the coils, amybe it did. I'll try backing the coils off to 3ms and see what happens but I hope my spark won't be too weak... More trials and tribulations with standalone...

Edit: Here's a screen of my ignition setup.

I never messed with Ignition setup, only the Trigger setup. Not sure why you changed the ignition setup. My ignition setup page is exactly like yours.

Can you jsut double check your coil time for me? Stock Haltech wants to have it set at 3.0ms, so just wanted to ask. I think ******* with it is what melted my coils. My one looked as bad as the one you posted pics of from when you cooked it with your MPI.

So did some more tuning again last night. Finally got my idle AFR's etc where I want. I need to mess with my air temp correction map some. If it's cold I run too rich. Got it dialed in a bit last night but still some work to do.

Went up to 15psi (timing locked at a safe 17*) and although the car is fast, it feels flat up top due to the timing. More and more as the days progress...

I had to change my ignition setup. My E6X came straight from Haltech, and was not configured for the Protege.

Dwell is related to coil charge time - so its possible you could have cooked one by messing with it i guess, by "overcharging" it...

I'd help you out again, but in this particular thing i can't...my microtech setup has a stand alone individual coil pack system....and the dwell settings etc are for that, not the stock protege coils :\
