Gaslock Indy-Cator (was: Power Near Shift Lever)

Hey, All,

My girlfriend has purchased a GasLock Indy-Cator for her 2005 Mazda 3 SP23. It arrived today, and it falls to me to install the device, and so I need to find a good location to tap into 12V, key-on power.

I could tap the wires leading to the lighter outlet, but I may have stumbled across a cleaner solution. Her car has no navigation system, but there's still a wiring connector hidden under the console for it. I figure that one of its pins must be 12v, and another must go to ground. Here's what it looks like, with the center console and shift boot removed:

I could unpack the multitester (just moved), but I thought I'd ask here first. Does anyone have a pinout for this? Also, where can I obtain the male conterpart of that connector?

Thanks in advance!

sorry, i don't know, but i would like to know...perhaps if no answer by tomorrow, ill jam my meter in there and find ya some power, maybe

Looks neat! although I wonder about the reason behind it all.

I mean... did she purchase one because it looks cool,
or does she really need to know what gear she's in by looking at the display?
I just hope it's not the latter. *^_^*

Please let us know how it goes.

There's only one reason anyone should purchase one of these, and that's to look awesome. If you're not comfortable parting with $150 of your hard-earned money purely for aesthetics, then it's probably not for you. If you need one of these to know what gear you're in, this is definitely not for you, and neither is your manual-transmission automobile.

The website touts other benefits, such as fuel savings (I guess it uses its built-in accelerometers to determine when you should gear up) but the only real value is that when people get in your car, they will say "Ooooo." Another reason I like it is that, in the future, I could put a tiny OLED display in it, and have some real fun.

I'll be sure to post results. I think I might throw in a MS short throw shift while I'm in there :D

I found 12V pins on that connector, but I can't locate the male counterpart. I decided to just tap the lines to the lighter outlet, and it worked out very well.

I ended up having to modify the shift lever boot a bit, and it was tedious, but well worth it... it looks freaking awesome. I'll be sure to post some pics soon.

I didn't get the short shift, (none in stock in my area) but I did install the iPod integration module. It's really nice to not deal with my FM transmitter, and to have my lighter outlet free again.

huh I never saw that before, it looks pretty neat. How does it feel? Is it heavy and nice feeling, grippy, smooth, or cheaper feeling? Honestly?!

The Indy-Cator knob itself is much lighter than the stock unit that came on my Mazda 3 (which actually appears to be weighted significantly). That said, it's definitely a high-quality build, and feels really nice. It's a completely smooth surface, and its shape fits the hand nicely.
