Painting Rims

Please don't be half-assed with painting...This is a mazda community, not Honda!! j/k

BBSF2 said it right.

If you have to... Just do it one rim at a time. Take one wheel off, clean the crap out of the whole rim, yes even the backside. You may want to use brake cleaner, simple green, or a similar product to get all of the brake dust off. Then you need to sand all of the original paint off of the rim (unless these are polished rims) Use the 100 grit, then 220, then 400. make sure that your sanding job looks smooth. The reason that you sand the rim is to give the paint a better surface to adhere to. If you don't do this, your paint job will not last!

Spray 1 coat of primer onto the wheel. Do one side at a time. Make sure to spray lightly and get the primer on the rim as evenly as possible. let the primer dry. Once dry, use 400 grit sandpaper the smooth out any uneven areas in the paint. The primer helps the paint to bond to the metal, and it also helps to fill in any pits, curb rash, et c. Do a second coat of primer.

After the primer is dry and the surface of the wheel looks good. Clean all of the dust from the primer and the environment off of the wheel. You can use a clean terrycloth with some alcohol to do this.

Now that you have a clean, even surface, bust out the Krylon (or whatever paint that you like). Be sure to coat the wheel lightly and evenly. DO NOT RUSH! Just take it slow and light. Let the paint cure about 15-20 min between coats. If you put the paint on too heavy, or too fast, it will clump up and look like crap!

After you do 2 or 3 coats, and are satisfied with the color. Let the top coat dry for 18-24 hours. Get a bucket full of water and some 1000 grit sandpaper. You should LIGHTLY sand the top coat of paint. this will eliminate some of the minor imperfections and also help the clear coat to bond.

Now you want to add 1-2 coats of clearcoat to the top of the painted rims. just take it slow and let it cure between layers. Clear coat gives you an extra layer of paint protection! Now that your fully painted. Let the rims fully cure (24 hrs) and there you go!

That is the proper way to do it. You don't really NEED to do the clearcoat, but the paint will last longer.
====================
I know you sound kinda young and impatient, but you really should take your time, and make it look good. You and others will appreciate the time that you put into it. Most people can easily tell when you take the quick and easy way out!

That and the fact the P5 rims are prone to corrosion, so many are covering it up.

Just did mine Came out pretty good. I am going to go back and do them again in the spring just for good measure.
