Cingular questions

OK, so Lisa has an old Nokia 5165. Cingular "claims" it will not work anymore, which I believe is a crock since they did this without any warning and the only option they are offering her is to buy a new phone and start on a new plan, obviously more money for them. We don't want to start a new plan because it will actually cost her $10 more a month. So the question is does anybody here in Atl have a Cingular phone they'd like to sell? And a question for the cell phone gurus, will cingular activate the phone on her current plan? I know Verizon will, but the Cingular reps are being totally uncooperative, when they're not complete morons. I-boost. any insight? Thanks guys, and gals.

So does that phone not have the sim card??? if it does you can swap out to any phone that uses it no problem

Check and see if it has a sim card. Its possible that the phone will be imcompatible with the newer systems that are being used but you should still be able to dial 911 for the next few years on it :) . Anyway I could probably ask my dad when he gets home, he works for Sony Ericsson now but still works closely with Cingular.

It's been a long time since I've gotten a phone (neither of ours have sims). So , does this mean that we'll have to get reamed by cingular once to be able to get the sim card and then be able to switch phones easier later?

They don't have any free phones?

It's complicated, but basically, yes, only if I go w/Cing on a family plan and don't mind using a phone that my big ass fingers have a tough time dialing. If she just gets a new phone, the phone is free, but she has to sign a new agreement at the current pricing, which is $10 more a month than she's paying now. I may have found a way to do it at Letstalk.com , but I have to find out if she can keep her current number, a must.

Woowoo! that was your 1000th "counting" post, what is that, about eleventy billion overall???? :D

wow what a *****...post that is j/k (enguard)

newho check to see if you can upgrade online. I know with verizon when you go to their stores they try to change your plan or upgrade it for more money but if you just renew your plan online you can order a new phone at the same time and keep your plan for the same cost

As a former Cingular employee I am sorry for your pain. (peep) The main reason that they are trying to get you to upgrade your phone is because that particular model Nokia phone is TDMA technology. A network that Cingular is trying to turn down, and cannot do so untill all of their current subscriber base has been rolled over to GSM. The new phones that they are offering you are based off of their GSM network and with the Technology change they are going to change the plan structure to something current because you most likely have a grandfathered rate plan. That is most likely why the monthly service plan is going to increase. Unfortunately the customer service group that Cingular has doesnt concern itself with the "customer", more with the company directive.

Thanks for the info. That makes since, irritating none the lesss, but it explains things. The thing is, if they had just sent out a letter giving a 30 or 60 day warning and said this is what you need to do, here is an incentive to do it, we would have OK with that, but to just kill her phone and then surreptitiously try to get her to spend more money with them is maddening. Unfortunately, her family lives in a rural area and Cingular has the best service in their area, so we're stuck. But thanks for the help!!

Have you gone into a store to talk to a rep? Sometimes face-to-face works better than over the phone with the customer service reps...

Yeah, tried that. The problem there is that they don't offer the same pricing in the store that they do on the web. They can match the plan pricing, but not the phone. Plus the rep we talked to seemed to be a moron, what's new?

Yeah...so have you figured out which phone to get her? I went to their site and they have several "free" phones that look decent.

Looks like we're going with the LG c2000, tried the others at the store and those seemed to have the best feeling keypad. We don't care about any other features, just having a phone THAT WORKS when needed. Bear in mind we're getting 2, one for her, and one for me, since I'll be switching over from Verizon.

before I got my Treo, I was also considering the 8125. I went to the store to ask about it, and they hadn't even heard of it. D'oh! So i just ended up buying my Treo off of ebay and swapping my card over.
