I guess it depends on how important you think a military is. The thing is we might spend less on our military, but do you think that China, N. Korea, Russia, Iran e.t.c will spend less on theirs? Being a superpower does not come cheap and maintaining the US's #1 status involves having a capable militray able to project it's force where it's needed (even though the US only uses a tiny percent of it's destructive capability in the quest to avoid civilian casualties). Just cuz we spend less on our armed forces does not mean others will which will just make us a target to those that hate us. I don't know about you but I'd much rather have us as a super power rather than Iran or N. Korea.
Where I think we should save money is all the pork barrel spending going on in washington. Pet projects of Democrats AND Republicans like that are all done in an effort for re-election. We as a nation need to stand up and tell our representatives STOP WASTING OUR FREAKIN TAX DOLLARS!!!!! We don't need a multi-million dollar bridge to nowhere, we don't need you wasting the money we entrust you with.
Take a look at the Pig Book:

Even 3rd world countries want 1st world armies because they know the best offense is a good defense and a stong military.
The US would have no problem maintaining a stong Military which it has now if we could cut all that pork.
A huge of the U.S. Budget is spent on social security, medicare and other programs for retirees etc. So some reform in those programs is needed, cuz I guarantee you, even though we pay into it now, social security will not exist when we retire.

Look at the amounts for social security, income security and medicare! That While important, those programs have absolutley BALLOONED from what we were told they were going to cost initially. While they are necesary programs they have to be kept within budget or when the current crop of baby boomers retire, those still working will be CRUSHED under the burden of paying for these services.
