Mazda6 MPS
Hi all -

I live in Tasmania - an island state to the south of the Australian mainland and recently took delivery of the Australian version of the Mazdaspeed6 - here it is called the Mazda6 MPS (for Mazda Performance Series). It looks and appears to be much the same (apart from the steering wheel being on the wrong side).

Only one model is offered in Australia - but a "leather pack" is available, which also includes sunroof, electric seats and Bose sound. I opted for the "poverty pack" for which i paid $A52.5k. The leather pack is an additional $A6k.

My car is liquid silver - see attached pics - and has now covered 7,000 problem free kilometres.

Cheers from downunder ....... Dan

Thanks for posting pics...Must be a rare site there...Any mods planned?

Welcome to the forum! I can't wait to drive one of those things, nice choice.

Are there any mods available yet for the MS6?

No mods planned (yet) - I like the car the way it is (but never say never) - this will be a low volume seller in australia - I doubt there will be much available. I'll keep an eye on this forum - there may be something that will be worthwhile looking at.

Trying to imagine what it would be like to shift left-handed .... (boom06)

imagine what side of the road you might be driving on ;) Suprisingly there are cars there we won't see here and you picked the speed 6. If you don't mind me asking...Were you shopping for one originaly or after test driving alot of cars you happen to see it on the lot as you drive by?

I have always like the Mazda6 but they were previously only available with the 4 cyl 2.3 engine, and that just wasn't enough power for someone used to 6's or 8's. The turbo takes care of that big time - this is the fastest and best handling car I've ever owned.

The other contenders were the Subaru Libery GT (Legacy elsewhere, I think) or 3.0R Spec B, but I just preferred the style of the Mazda6.

A local TV show did a comparo with Liberty GT and the MPS - I ripped a video if anyone is interested - they favoured the GT. Australia's 2 motoring mags, Wheels and Motor also did comparos between these cars - both favouring the MPS. I have scans - let me know if you'd like a copy.

Hi Tassie (and everyone)

I'm in Adelaide (South Australia) and have pretty much decided to go for a 6MPS also. Currently driving a Ford Falcon XR6 Turbo (6 cylinder 4.0 Ltr DOHC Turbo)

http://photobucket.com/albums/d179/bbcrowdog/

I too have been tossing up between the MPS and the Liberty (Legacy) 2.0 GT, the 3.0R Spec B. Have posted plenty of my thoughts on test drives here:

It seems to me the MPS sales have been pretty slow in Aus so far. Very little marketing so far may have something to do with it. The dealers have plenty of stock available. I have a quote from an online car-broker for a Leather Pack with tint, alarm and cargo liner for $53,800 on the road, which seems like a great deal (Sorry bout that Tassie) (about $6300 off)

Pleased to see you've had no probs so far Tassie.

That's a very good price, bb. I guess there is some '05 plated stock around they are prepared to deal on. Marketing is very low key - just magazine ads as far as I've seen.

I read your report elsewhere, and agree with your observations about the performance of the MPS. Mine has 8,000 km and engine and gearchange are loosening up very nicely, wih no hint at all any more of the slight shuder previously experienced at around 2-2,500rpm.

The punchiness of the enging is amazing ....... there is a narrow windy road I travel often. In other manual cars I have driven, there are constant gearchanges, but I just leave the MPS in 4th and it pulls out of corners and up hills very smoothly. It also helps that you can carry much more speed into the corners.

I feel you won't regret our decision - I am certainly ejoying mine.

Cheers.......Dan

I dont need the car till about April, so I got them to confirm today that I would get an 06 built car if I sign up. No probs.

I want an alarm also and apparently they are nearing the release of a mazda integrated alarm for the latest model 6's.

I believe some countries get the alarm standard already, which doesnt make much sense.

CONGRATULATIONS!!

I picked mine up Friday in Titanium Gray II... What an incredible car! I love it more every mile I drive it :)
