Handheld GPS?

I keep seeing people with those little garmin etrex gps things on this forum. What exactly are they being used for? They don't give you turn by turn directions right? I've been looking to get something that will give me turn by turn directions (so I can upgrade from my laptop gps by delorme), but all the systems are at least $500 it seems. Will I be able to get something other than for my laptop for $200 or less? Again, what exactly are people using those handheld gps's for in their cars?

there is a delorme system that is about $130 or $140 that i believe gives talking turn by turn directions. there is also a garmin USB unit and a microsoft USB unit. they are all around $130. i'm in charge of the electonics dept at staples, so here's a plug for us:

edit: but yeah, your not really going to find the PDA type for under $500. we had the garmin unit on sale for $400 a week or so ago, i think.

Thanks for the help, but as I said before, I already have the delorme setup, and it's really a pain to hook my laptop up in my car with the usb gps. What are people using those garmin etrek's for?

Thanks!

I have a Garmin GPSMAP 60C . It mounts perfectly in the P5 and gets excellent reception all over. The cool thing is it's a handheld but it has full
autorouting capabilites -just like top end in dash units. I use it for driving and hiking. I'm also moving from Montana to SoCal soon and I'd be completely lost out there without it. It also has enough memory to store all of Southern Cal maps or in my case, all of Montana, Idaho, Wash., & Oregon. I paid $330. theres also the Legend C (Garmin) that auotroutes for about $250 but it has less memory for map storage.

So does this do turn by turn directions (with distances until each turn)?

Thanks!

Yep. Turn by turn directions to anywhere you wish to go. Before you approach a turn a turn warning sounds and the screen zooms in to show the upcoming turn in high detail along with 'distance to turn' and 'time remaining' till turn. There are actually hundreds of different "data fields" you can display on screen such as current speed, odometer, moving average, heading, etc. I find the speedometer more accurate than the one in the car since they are actually sped up about 3-4mph. The great thing about it is that it's not permanently installed like some of those $1000 gps units and you just take it pretty much anywhere.

Am i the only geek with gps setup ? I'd really like to see what some of you are using.
