So yea..I look up the color for the ignition wire and I go to find it and AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!! There are like 400000000000000 wires....I know this is kind of a "duh?" statement but I didn't think I would have trouble finding it..Can anyone give me a detailed description as how to get to it? I am trying to permantly wire a radar detector without using a switch...Thanks!

Wel....

Normally, if your looking for a "true" ignition wire, it can be found in a harness leading to the key switch. You will be lookin for a wire that is like 12-16 ga. A true ignition wire shows ground when the key is off and shows +12v when the key is in the crank and run positions. Just look for a bundle of thicker wires that is running towards where your key goes in. It is really not hard.

You just want a wire that's hot when the ignition is on, right? Use the cigarette lighter wire, just pop the lighter assembly out then splice onto that wire.

The collumn is the standard place to go as it is ample in capacity for damn near anything.
I would use that wire as I listed in my sticky.

Hi Kza,

As JasonH and 1st MP3 mentioned, if your radar detector doesn't need so much current, then you'll be able to find some easier cable behind the dash or in the kick panel, but if what you definitely need is the True ignition wire, then let's get to it...!

First you need to uncover the steering colum area to gain access (it's going to be much easier) to the ignition wire. ZoomZoom is right, it's a bunch of 12 Ga. cables going to the key cylinder in the steering colum. As you'll be able to check in 1st MP3's alarm wiring post, it's the black/blue wire, but take the time to confirm it with a multimeter...

These are the screws holding the steering colum plastic covers together... Note the one closer to the pedals is a different tread than the 2 others...

Ahora :
You should see the wire harness to the left of the steering colum...
That's the one with the thick cables, and one of those is the ignition wire. For sure those are going to be taped together, or in a black plastiv wrap, but you can cut that away (personally I cut it away while I worked on it, then I taped it back as good as possible...)

Then I just disconnected the harness to be able to work on to the ignition wire.
I used solder to have a good union, taped back everything, and connected again the harness.

Note in the picture the red tab on top of the plastic connector. You'll need to pull this out with the tip of a small screwdriver to unlock the connector, then you'll be able to press on the top white portion so you can disconnect it.

Hope this helps you somehow, and good luck with your Radar installation...:p

Later,
FEDE.

Hey that's cool. I guess I have been doing car audio/security systems for so long (almost 10 years) that I forget that to the novice a picture says a thousand words. I was thinking as I read his reply "anybody else" damn, do you want me to come over and do it for ya!! LOL. I am such a jerk sometimes.

peace
Griff
