Will CAI give me more TOP END?

I'm a proud new owner of an 02 P5 and I'm looking for a lil more power by means of a CAI. I'm mainly interested in an INJEN CAI. Is this product carb legal? Or will this mod potientially make my Check engine light go on?
I also wanted to know if this mod will give me a lil more top end. I've noticed my power band seems to level off around 5000RPM.

Thanks for the help...

carb legal and yes some improved top end

plus is sounds sweet.

and while im at it you should drop by the Mazda Owners Club of California at www.moccforums.com we do lots of meets in the socal area.

welcome to the forum, make sure you disconnect the battery when you install it. If you dont, the MAS will throw the check engine light.

Thanks...Glad to be a part of it. This forum is filled with useful info and has been very helpful. It actually helped influence me to buy a p5.

Does anyone else recommend any other CAI? or is INJEN the way to go?

K&N CAI. can be made into a SRI as well. K&N makes the best filters. Plus the filter comes with a protective wrap thats water resistant and barely impedes air flow...less than 10% reduction. i noticed a difference in power with this. sounds cool too. all the good(K&N, Injen, AEM)CAI intakes will give maybe 4-7 HP on our cars. mostly top end power.

never got a CEL with mine.

i would put it more in the range of 2-4 hp.

I've had both a CAI and a SRI in my P5. The only difference between the two is a little more low end torque with the CAI and it's a little quieter. Both give you a little more top end power (3000+ rpms). With both systems you will only see a few hp gains, like uclap5 says, only about 2-4 hp at most.

The only differnce in brands that you will notice is in your wallet.

As for disconnecting you battery, you don't have to. I used to do it but with my last experiment, I didn't and there was no problems. Some people will tell you that reseting your ecu will help the car "learn" your new mod faster but all you have to do is drive.

never got the CEL either... we did disconnect the batt though.... but that was halfway through, anyway i just installed Injen last weekend and it sounds sweet... specially above 4k. And i like the hiss it gives when u turn the car off.

Awesome...thanks again for the all the great Info. How hard is an install for CAI anyway? Do you have to remove your bumper for this?? and I've noticed that you would have to rellocate the resevior as well. Is this a simple task?

the install is relatively simple. the only prob i had was bending over the engine....my back started to kill me. putting on the filter was awkward...you have to reach up into the wheel well. bumper does not need to be pulled off. brackets(at least for the K&N) are included to relocate the resevoir.

A lot of you guys say that the sound is great. How does a CAI sounds anyways? Does anyone have any sound clips?

sound

I have two of the injen but they are wav files and I cannot attatch them (invalid extension type)? Any tips?

Saying that K&N makes the best filters is a generalization. They make a cleanable, relatively cheap hig-flow filter than can easily be re-used, but many companys, such as HKS, make much better flowing filters that have a very short life.

Also, the most you'll see on a stock or lightly modified FS-DE is 5 hp. That's at the crank. And peak HP. So basically, CAI's or SRI's make sound and a couple hp in good conditions on a car this low in hp to start with.

I got an ebay intake for $40 and it is the EXACT same design as the Injen. Of course, it might make you fail an emisions test in CA cause it's not CARB legal, but I cant imagine what makes it different. They have the same sensor locations, same diameter piping, and are mandrel bent, just like Injen. The $160 extra dollars for an Injen is basically for the guarentee that it'll pass emmisions test and the brand name.

Here's the dyno of the K&N (at the wheels)

+5 hp in the mid range.

Is 5 hp for 700 rpms really worth $350 or whatever the typhoon costs? I'd rather buy headers or cams, something that can make a real difference.

Actually it was $280. sure it was more than an injen but its like two intakes in one. sure its a generalization about the filter quality but just from looking at the design of the filter the K&N has more surface area than the others for better air flow. Anyway, I'm happy with mine....besides i was able to get it in red.
