2002 Protege ES
I started this project way back in December, but most of the time was spent waiting for money to buy the rest of the parts. Right now the case is far from complete but it's in the car and working, as you can see in the pictures. Here's the specs for those in the know:

VIA Epia M-10000 w/ 1 ghz C3 processor
256 MB RAM
80 GB HD
Opus Solutions 150-watt DC-DC PSU
16x DVD-ROM
7" fold-out touchscreen monitor
Sony CDX-MP80 head unit

It's running on Windows XP Professional with over 8,000 mp3's and Delorme Street Atlas USA 2004 GPS software.

nice computer kicks ass LCD...
just though some poeple might wanna jump on this 7 inch car lcd for $399.99 + 15 dollars shipping

I hope you don't plan on driving around with you computer on... Spinning HD + bumpy road = dead hd quick.

Thanks all. The finished case will have a clear plexiglass panel in front w/ a cooling fan and mounted DVD-ROM (and red neon lights).

moeed - The screen is the DWW-7VGA from www.digitalww.com.
katsmp3 - Cost came to about $1650 - $600 parts, $500 screen, $250 head unit, $300 replacement mobo/hd after they were fried :(.
noclue - The HD is mounted vertically to prevent short-outs.

hmm pretty smart... looks good too....

if you hit bumps w/the HD spinning the disks/laser heads can meet and ruin the HD, mounting it vertically will prevent this? How? out of curiousity.

get creative and build a hard drive suspension system ouf of shock absorbing foam/other materials. its fun

^^^ What he said! The only component I am missing from my setup right now is the VGA screen. As a matter of fact, after looking at your screen, that is the same one I have been waiting to get. Digitalww.com kicks ass! Money has been tight lately. :(

Here are the details on my project: http://www.mp3car.com/vbulletin/showthread.php?t=27445

The danger is to the HD, your CD-Rom will just skip like a audio CD, and recover.
But if your harddrive's read head hits the disk inside, it will scratch it and kill data.
If you mount it verticle, the head will only loose tracking, which it can recover from.

Shock mounts for harddrive's also help, as well as using a laptop-style drive, which is made for higher G's

interesting, thank you. I was considering doing a similar setup for when I have my haltech EMS installed.

i would have just bought an older laptop off ebay, and bought an lcd. it'd be alot cheaper, and it would fit right under your seat. $1,600 is alot for just visual's and mp3's man. either or, nice setup. id build a car pc, but i wouldnt want it getting ganked.
