heat it up with a torch and twist it off.
Just be reeeeeaaaaalllly careful with a torch inside your car. I've heard that those "mini-torches" (the ones that are pen-sized) are good for this.

I also heard of one guy that just used a heat-gun and a lot of patience.

Remember that the stock knob won't fit without the extension. I think. Someone back me up on this.

well i meant remove the whole lever first. i guess i shoulda made that clear.

there is no thread without the extension. what we did for my friends car was remove the shifter, torch the extension and twist it off, use a Sawzall to cut the shifter down a few inches and weld the extension back on to make a phony short shifter since (gasp) he liked the stock throw

Um...by the time you do that, you could have bought a real short shifter and be miles ahead on your time, headaches, and quality of finished product.

Just my $.01

Or you could be married to an auto tech and get it done for free. :D That's what my hubby did when he installed my Flameball shifter for Valentine's Day this year.

All I did was take the shifter out of the car and heat the upper wiith a torch. after it's hot just twist it off. Remove the excess rubber with a knife (or just burn it off with the torch like I did). After you have it cleaned up a bit use a bench grinder to make the diameter of the shaft a bit smaller, then use a tap and die set and cut new threads into it. Just make sure you cut the right size threads and that you use plenty of grese when you reinstall the shifter.
It's not a "real" short shifter, but it's free and takes only aprox. 45min.

love that flame ball!

so what yunz are sayin is it stays, cuz im not removing the whole shifter other then to replce it, and that would replace my warranty with nothing, cuz im getting rid dis b**** first chance i get.

and besides im not allowed to play with anything involving lighters, matches or open flame

thanx fo da info

You can replace your stock shifter with one from an MP3 or MSP. Both of these shifters are~one inch shorter than yours above the fulcrum point but the same length below the fulcrum point as yours. Consequently, neither of these shifters will shorten the "throw" but your hand will move through a shorter arc when you shift. Since both these shifters are OEM in their respective vehicles, you should be able to change to either one of them without voiding your warranty. This is what I did.

to remove that piece you must, use a vise grip and blow torch, heat the piece up all around and at the same time twist the peice with the vise grip. Under the piece is a type of rubber by heating it it gets soft. it should pop right off after that.
