Having owned two CX-5s (2013 and 2023), from my POV the main reason to wait for the redesign is the longer wheelbase which translates into more cargo space and (more importantly) more rear seat legroom. The latter of which has always been an aggravating CX-5 shortcoming.

It's really kind of pointless to compare acceleration of a CX-5 to a Mazda 6 or, in my case, a 3 as the gearing is totally different. You're not going to be able to buy that separately. Best bet would be a junkyard. All 1st gens should be the same and it's just a cover for the emergency park release (for when you can't get the trans out of park in the normal manner).

These engines loosen up after 5 or 6k miles. My guess is that's what you're feeling.
