US Diesel's big splash introduction

Hi, I'm here to see Mr. Masahiro Moro
No, I do not have an appointment but we need to talk about this freaking CX-5 Diesel he keeps promising us.

I actually drive past this building a few times a week.

Nice box shaped building. Doesn't go with their Kodo Design philosophy (rofl)

Think you need to do a sit in until they give you concrete proof of date of release (lol)

worst part is I actually spent some time with Mr. Moro in November at SevenStock but I was too busy talking Rotary stuff to ask about the Diesel.
At the time I still foolishly believed it would be out by year end.

Don't worry Xeler8ing, the interior is very 'kodo'

(gah) Hang your head in shame. A golden opportunity and you let it slip by. Just joking mate :D

Good to know!

Fail!
I did call the hosers up in Saco ME..no info despite talking it up on their site..I told them they should fix the site.

Whats the need for MZ to introduce CX5 diesel in US? If 10 gasoline are sold, maybe 1 diesel will be sold. Don't understand. I haven't gone thru 70 pages in this thread but see no point.
What I do see are those who care about MPG would jump to hybrids (++: HOV lanes in many states access)
Rather - MZ should introduce something equivalent to Toyota 4Runner/etc. let's say GX-5 and make it in diesel. Now that'd make sense ; both from towing / mountain climbing/ off-road / etc. By vanilla CX-5: nah, don't see a market. In US - even the higher MPG is offset by higher $$ at pump and pumps are far in-between.

OP here..can't believe you haven't gone through all 70 pages & 1000+ comments:D but it boils down to +50% more torque and ~30% more efficiency and range so if you still don't see the point then stay with the majority. I've been waiting a long time for an awd diesel that is not crazy expensive or slow..bmw failed me, Mercedes only offered one in a shell that was unappealing to me, then Mazda announces (way early obviously) in a vehicle I really like for commuting..take my $!

There was a debate on TV here about the future of diesels and whether they really are as bad as people imagine. Several chemists and engineers agreed that a Euro VI diesel (which the Cx-5 easily exceeds) is very much less harmful than a gasoline engine. I agree that hybrids and batteries are the way forward but modern diesels are very clean and your US version should be cleaner still.

No, those who care about mpg would jump to diesel not hybrids as:
- Hybrids saving on hwy is close to none
- Price of the hybrid model of the same car is 20% higher

Plain and simple!

Can't speak for Jersey but here its only a 5-10% premium over regular, widely available in my parts(apps can help too) and whether it makes sense for Mazda remains to be seen but depending on where the numbers shake out 26 vs 36hwy (my real world hwy guesstimates) is pretty huge as is 540 vs 390/tank so yeah ill play this over a hybrid like Lionel ie all night long, all night.

The CX5-diesel US launch is worth waiting for. I have owned my 2017 CX-5 2.2 AWD Diesel for 6 months now. I live in North Sweden and beside driving in nice summer conditions, I have trialed the vehicle in quite rough winter conditions including snow, ice and severe cold weather, also with a trailer hooked on the vehicle. I have previous experience from other brands offering 4WD/AWD vehicles and my conclusion is that Mazda is doing really good in comparison with other CUVs, close to the less affordable Volvo XC60 whos AWD is what I would consider one of the leading AWD systems in the CUV segment, in sense of intelligence, user experience and efficency. In regards to the diesel/gasoline choice, my opinion is that the Mazda 2.2L diesel engine is what makes the car fun and nice to drive, offering that direct strong torque from start! The very same high torque/low rpm feature makes the car also ideal for driving in urban areas, with all those red light start/stops. A recommendation I have is to equip your new CX-5 with the stock-mounted, remote controlled Webasto diesel-heater (if avalable option in the US/CAN). -That is a really nice piece of equipment for getting the heat up fast in the motor and interior before firing up the motor cold days. Regarding noise...for the 2017 CX5 release, Mazda made some good efforts making the car overall more quiet and that effort apparently included also some measures made in the diesel motor design. -It definetely runs more quiet and less 'agricultural' than previous Mazda diesel motors.

Go Mazda! Go Diesel! /Rob

Just what my local dealer said... "haven't received allocation list to know exactly what or when..but we are being told late March to early April"

Monterra - its just that I feel personally many may not have a need for diesel. For example you cite 50% more torque, great. But those who drive in mostly urban flat areas with mix of city/highway with zero need of towing along with (a fact I just reviewed) - the EU diesel CX-5 doesn't seem to have too much acceleration gains in 0 to 62 is 10.3 sec. AWD! See here

Efficiency: I use non-premium gas and premium is always about .30 cents more and at today's prices it's about 10%. Coupled with diesel being even more than premium by at least an additional 10 cents I am looking at .40 cents increase which boils down to approx. 15% increase in cost vs. standard gas. I did some maths and yes - with higher MPG for diesel it comes out on top but (and a big but) out here with gasoline engines outshining diesel 1:20, # of pumps having diesel is much less and those which do have them are invariably on the costly side even for standard gasoline. In effect, that 15% increase is now 25% increase, then it makes no sense.

What I am trying to get at is Mazda might introduce the diesel but it'll be a tough sell, at least in these parts.

No - I'd love hybrids because I commute and hybrids allow me to use HOV. That, by itself is a killer feature. Tolls give a discount if hybrid. Another killer feature.
