Help Me Decide: CX-5 vs. CR-V

Beautifully elegant (though admittedly some aspects (shifter) not my style):

Cluttered dash and readouts (in my opinion), not to mention those miserable little brown pieces.:

Those are probably the only picture's with tangible meaning to me in all of this, unless tex produces a picture of a dusty red CX-5.

The damn brake is too close to the gas pedal in the Mazda, something these pictures actually show. I've pressed both at the same time. Not that I've ever come close to hitting someone because of it, but it's sure pumped some extra adrenaline a few times. And the left bend of the center is potentially a problem as well but probably something I'd adapt to.

Otherwise, a much more elegant interior for the Mazda.

For me the dash wasn't too bad. The low sitting NAV screen is something I didn't like. It sits quite low and away from you so looking at nav map will take your eyes completely off the road. Also the steering wheel has thick wings on it. I was not a fan of the volume control on the steering wheel. Brown pieces of plastic are meh. Molded trim stitching was meh (I think they should have just left it off).

Wish the AC controllers were higher on the CX-5

I'll say coming from the Jeep to the CX-5, that yes they are way closer together than I was used to and it took me a bit to get used to for sure. But I can't say I've ever done that before. Sounds scary.

The button layout IMO on the CRV is better as all the controls are in one spot(including the NAV screen). The CX-5 has the Nav, AC and Nav control buttons all in different locations. Seems like it would be a hassle. Not to mention no dead pedal, boring mechanical gauges, foot/brake too close to each other. The design in the CX-5 looks nice but doesn't look very practical IMO.

One of my buddies has a Ghibli. Haven't had a chance to pick his brain about it yet.
Ghibli's are selling 15-20K off the MSRP. No wonder quite a few parts inside are from Dodge Dart / Chrysler.
FCA should just change their name to Cancer car company. People will buy them just for honesty.

The road noise in the crv was a deal killer for me.

You can add sound insulation and better tires. Probably run you around 2200-2300 USD. Factor that in and your loaded 38K CRV is not 40.2K. Jesus would have wept.

I don't mind the shifter as it is pretty much similar to my current 6

even so, still probably nicer than a CX5, and will certainly blow its doors off.

It is. My 2014 has the older gated style shifter. I realize I am the minority and that it looks cheaper, but I prefer it's function to the new shifters.

I've driven a 2008 BK Mazda 3 with its gated shifter and I prefer the straight through shifter of my Mazda6. Bang it down and your into gear instead of going around a maze (wink)

I like not having to press a button down. I pretty much bang mine down too.

Different strokes for different folks I guess. :)

Aww crap, you guys just brought something to my attention that I didn't even notice. My MZ5 had a gated shifter which I liked, but I don't really know if I like this new one any less. This new one is certainly a lot prettier than what i'm used to looking at.

It's fine, you will like it :)

I quite like having the leather boot over a gated shifter. And the button under the front of the shifter isn't sticking out to the side in an overly obvious way. Looks nicer to my eyes. If it weren't for the boot though I do prefer the gate just for some visual interest.

For whatever it's worth...

Things I don’t like about the CX-5 cockpit:

Not a fan of the accelerator pedal hinge on the floor
Climate controls unnecessarily low and harder to reach
Wasted space in the prime real estate of the center stack
Infotainment controls are further back than I would like
Piano black attracts dust
Vents blow right on your hands
A bit too much black

Things I don’t like about the CR-V cockpit:

I don’t like digital speedometers
Not a fan of the bar tach or the strange angled temp & fuel gauges
Angle of the infotainment screen can pick up sun glare
Fixed buttons on left of infotainment screen are capacitive
Driving position is a little more SUV- or minivan-like
High shifter just looks weird to me
Styling is "busy" looking

I like to rest my hand on the shifter (as if I were driving a stick), and when I use manual mode (which is fairly often), I just like the feel/look of this one better for that.

But that's just me. It clearly looks dated/cheaper and takes up way more real estate than the newer ones.

I agree with all of this...

Adjust the direction of the vents perhaps (scratch)
