Dissapointed - ear shattering noise when rear windows are down

The one 'thing' I did not test drive. Is it me, my sensitive hearing or that I have not had a new car since 1999? The shuddering, high pitched noise the wind makes when one/both rear windows are down. This is such a drive drag (excuse the pun), for me. I noticed this bcz I have a dog, so back window(s) are often down.

is this common w/CUV's like this? What is it with the window design that causes this horrible noise? Is there a mod to decrease this?

Otherwise happy w/my new cx5.

TY

Yes. It's caused by the car filling with air until it can take no more then expelling the excess pressure. You can usually regulate it by adjusting the gap or opening the sunroof.

Very common among all cars these days. If you going to have the windows down you need to open the sun roof. I keep mine tilted up!

Yep! If you don't have a sunroof, opening the front windows slightly will offset the change in air as well so that you don't have that annoying noise.

Personally, I don't like wind whipping across the interior of the vehicle. I've always had good results with cracking open the rear window diagonal from the front window that is open/cracked. If I have both front windows open, I do the same with both rear.

+1

I found front passenger - rear driver combo works the best, as the wind (and dust) doesn't blow directly into me but still keep the airflow across the car interior to keep it cool and fresh. If you open both front windows, the air will blow strongly around front-back-front and the rear passenger will suffer direct wind blow (got complains from my daughter sitting in the back as her hair kept getting into her face when I did that).

Boy, wasn't sure what he was talking about so I rolled one of the rear windows down on the way home today. Wow, that's almost painful. Now, I never have any reason to drive with jus one rear window down but boy is that really weird

It's called wind buffeting. Most cars will do this if you roll just the rear windows down. It's science.

Works great for playing a flute or other wind instrument... But in a car, not so much...

Venting the roof, a front window, or sometimes even just putting the HVAC on FRESH instead of RECIRC should change the note...(guitar)

Good info here. I've noticed this happen before but I never knew there were ways to workaround it and keep the rear windows down.

Yup, "breaking wind" (haha) by opening other windows/sunroof did the trick. Thanks everyone.

I thought all cars did the same, all mine do/did.
Just crack the front windows open a tiny bit and thats it.
