paddle shift on CX-5

How did you get everything to work and line up on your 2016 ?
(dunno)

Parts I've used for my 2016 paddle shift install.

D10J-V7-480 (Steering wheel rear cover, w/paddle shift)
K015-V7-481 (Wire harness, clock spring to start/stop unit)
BHT1-66-3P0 (Paddle switch)
BNK8-66-4M2 (Wire harness, w/cruise control, w/paddle shifters)
9YA0-11-007 (Steering wheel bolt)
GJS2-32-750 (Paddle switch screws)

I like that chrome trim ring on the start button too...

Yep, I haven't given up yet, but finding a compatible back plate is my first priority. If anyone buys one with a different part number than the one I have, i'd love to see photos of it.

Fahrenheit, since your car is a 2016 it might be more prepared for paddle shift, so here are a couple of questions:

did your steering wheel have all 4 holes(to attach paddle shifters) drilled and threaded allready from factory?
Yes, the factory steering wheel were pre-drilled and threaded.

What about wiring between lower clockspring and start/stop unit, did you have to add this or was it installed from factory?
I have to add this wire harness to complete paddle shift circuit trace.

I see this part listed as the rear cover for the Mazda CX-3. So for our 2016 CX-5 the mazda 6 rear cover won't fit?, Can you confirm? also where did yo get this cover? i see non of these parts listed on onlinemazdaparts.com.

Okay, not wanting to be a pain in the ass, but can you provide a step by step guide on how to connect the KO15-V7-481 wire harness? where do each of those cables go?

Now that resolves the issue why the Mazda6 cover didn't work on the 2016 CX5. What the 2016 CX5's require is a CX-3 rear steering wheel cover and NOT a Mazda6 cover.

What we need to complete the puzzle is where and how does the KO15-V7-481 electrical wires attach to?

Offering this up as possibly some help ...

Note:
1. Chinese blogger is using non-OEM wiring harnesses.
2. The actual wiring instructions are not very clear or well documented.
3. The blogger starts removing the airbag unit BEFORE disconnecting the battery, an incredibly stupid thing to do.

The wiring diagram for the K015-V7-481 harness has been posted many times, including earlier in this thread. It connects the clock spring to the start/stop unit. If you want to see where the K015-V7-481 goes, watch this portion of this video. Although the video shows a non-OEM harness, its essentially identical to the K015-V7-481.

Yes, but the cool microfiber cloth monogrammed with "CX-5" almost makes up for it.

    - The wire harness Chinese write-up used looks almost the same as OEM K015-V7-481 harness other than a ground ring washer already attached.
  2. The actual wiring instructions are not very clear or well documented.
    - I did see clear wiring instruction in there right below the picture of K015-V7-481 harness.
  3. The blogger starts removing the airbag unit BEFORE disconnecting the battery, an incredibly stupid thing to do.
    - The reason why the Chinese write-up suggested not to disconnect the negative post while removing the airbag is if you do it, the steering wheel will get locked up and can't make turns which is needed for removing airbag more easily. Further, it did say don't disconnect airbag wires until you disconnected the battery first!

I was referring to the fact that the Chinese blogger does NOT use the OEM BNK8-66-4M2 harness (the one inside the steering wheel). Unlike what the blog shows, there is no need to insert loose wires into the harness connectors inside the steering wheel if you use the OEM harness.

If its clear to you, that's great. However, I don't see any clear illustration or photos of the physical installation points for the K015-V7-481 harness or its non-OEM cousin, which is why I linked the Youtube video. Also, because he's using an non-OEM harness, the wire colors are wrong. Lastly, I'm not even sure the blogger even uses the term stop/stop unit, but I don't speak Chinese and Google Translate can only do so much.

That's nice for him, but it violates widely disseminated best practices for handling air bags. It violates Mazda's own published air bag removal procedures, and violates several of Mazda's express safety warnings.

Mazda Japan through japanparts.com

Thanks for the photo, this illustrates the access point for the airbag release is the same as stock, so i'm comfortable with this part number. It also matches the part number I pulled from the Mazda JDM accessory catalog, so i'm convinced this will fit. I'll order the parts shortly, but japanparts seems to take a while for delivery. Actually, I can't put the "slow" label on them, the wiring harness I ordered has been sitting in customs for almost 10 days...

Can you order the parts directly through the Mazda dealership?

I think I'm just gonna sit back and watch this mod and not undertake myself.... in general I have a natural fear of extremely high amperage and air bags. :-) ...

I know you guys will eventually get it hammered out.

Unknown, but possibly since it is a stock CX-3 part. I will not be doing that for my own reasons, but that may be a good option for others.

Airbags are only an issue if you set them off...ha.

That's what I love about Japanparts; they will order s*** even if it's not readily on their website.
