How to bend a car at the SCCA runoffs

Sounds like quite the adventure, Derrick! Amazing that you managed to get that car back on the track at all! Any news on that transmission fluid leak? Fixable, I hope/assume...

That was a huge off and a big hit...Kudos to your crew for being able to put it right let alone in a couple if days. Glad to hear you were ok through it all. Just think if you didn't have the wonky grip with the fluid leak....

We found the leak in the transmission. There was a crack underneath the transmission top bracket. Kind of weird spot too which was not visible unless you have the bracket off. We fixed it with JB weld and it seems to be holding the transmission fluid back. If it starts to seep I will swap the case half out.

The bill to fix it was about what it would have been with a normal crash actually. The shop was great and didn't gouge us for the priority service (they were kind of slow). Mazda covered the difference between the overnight cost and the ground shipping (they want to have their cars on the track) for the runoffs which is what made it possible to get the car going again as fast as we did.

The ride was rather crazy with the oil leaking and I feel super bad that Bobby was behind me in the Yaris and went off the track :(

Hell of a story man! Glad you were able to get it back together so quickly and that Mazda helped with some costs.

The in car video of the wall hit makes me cringe a bit. You can see how far my head moved even with the hans/containment seat/and right side net. It would have been ugly without the safety stuff. The right side nets are not required for club racing but I put one in as a just in case (glad I did)

Racing is racing and $h!t happens. I should have backed off a bit when the car got loose going up T5 but I was doing everything in my power to get some distance on that Mini.

Its kinda funny I got caught behind both Mazda 2s when the gear oil got dumped.

That 130lbs bonus weight we picked up hurt. Are you going to build another B-Spec car?

Glad you got the car up and running quickly. Too bad im not building a b-spec car, I'd love to race against you derrick.

Nope, I have a fully built STF car that won't take much work to make it competitive in HP or a mid pack car in STL car. Its currently way too fast to be a cheaty BS car.

I bet you could do well in HP based on how Jason was doing in his car. STL would be interesting, I was considering doing that to the Mazda 2 for a while. If we are getting clobbered with weight still I may jump that ship.

How much work would it take to put an MZR or DISI in the 2 or the better question, how much hp could you get out of a B6? I know the 1NZ is capable of at least 140 to the wheels which isn't enough to make a winning car but enough to have fun.

I bet we can get 140-150 out of the stock engine in the 2. A Speed3 motor has been installed in a 2 before so the 2.0/2.3/2.5 non turbo should go in easy enough. It would be interesting to find the displacement point for power vs weight on the different motors in the 2 for the best package.

I think 1.8l would be a sweet spot but that would limit engine options unless your Honda. I've got the 2zz as an option but its a PITA to swap and requires some modification to the frame.

I have all sorts of good things available to build a BP motor. Use the VVT head, crank up the compression, hmm.......
