For those of you who might be interested in something a little smaller than CX-5...

I am just about to pull the trigger on a new CX-5, and knowing this makes me nervous and wonder if I should wait to purchase until we know about the CX-3! I have a 2005 Mazda 3 Hatchback, and would potentially be interested in the CX-3 if it has AWD and significant ground clearance a la the Subaru Crosstrek...

Does "presenting at auto show" mean "available for sale"? If you need a car now and you like the CX-5, it'd be stupid to wait for another year until the CX-3 even comes to a dealership near you...

Can't imagine an even smaller version of the CX5. Groceries take up the entire cargo floor every 2 weeks at Costco :) What are the interior specs? A Mazda 3 hatch would be an immediate answer if a smaller vehical was needed. Hope Mazda doesn't fall into making too many models that are literally no different from each other like other car makers do.

Well if both the CX-5 and Mazda 3 share the same wheelbase at 106.3" and the CX-3 will be based off the Mazda 2 which has a 98" wheelbase...you do the math.

They should make a CX8, out of the Mazda 6 platform. Just kidding.
I agree, that there is no point in making even smaller vehicles, like the Mazda CX3.
They could just raise the height of the 3 and call it CX3.
Even the Tiguan, has just a bit bigger trunk area, than my Golf used to have.

My interest or hope is that is might be available with a manual transmission at a higher trim level and in more colors than the CX-5.

I see no place for the CX3 as the Mazda3 hatch will have more storage capacity, and get better mpg.
The only way the CX3 might get interest is with a ridiculously powerful engine.
Perhaps the 2.5L with a stick, or even better the speed3 engine.

I will say that if they bring back sky blue mica color on the CX-3, I'll be very upset and personally will write a letter to Mazda North America! I was highly disappointed when they got rid of it in favor of the blue reflex mica (which I ended up with) for 2015!

This market is currently dominated by the Nissan Juke. I see tons of those around central TX. There is definitely a market for a less expensive 2 door (maybe 2.5? 4 would seem cramped I think) car-based SUV - especially if it doesn't have the same funky appearance that Juke has. They'll sell just fine.

The CX5 is a raised and embiggened 3. The CX3 will be the same idea but on the 2's platform. Done right, the CX3 might become a rally friendly winner with short length and high ride. Lots of people don't want a low slung sub compact like the 2 or the 3 but also aren't at the $22k+ market level of the CX5.

It's an inexpensive car you can drive down a trail without scraping.

The success of the Buick Encore in some key markets might be a good indicator...

Good point, I never think of Buick..

And the Encore is pretty expensive for a small car, over 30k

Yes and lucrative too. These days just because a SUV is small doesn't mean the MSRP is cheap. Another example is the best-selling Kia model in the US, the Soul. Designations as SUVs/light trucks in the US gives the automakers some regulatory slack from a emissions/gas mileage/safety standpoint.

Instead of bring out another model Mazda should fix the bugs in their current line up.

In no order:

Rear cargo light, put it on the ceiling and make it brighter, its near useless on the side.
Illuminated door/window locks.
Add another USB port and locate it beside the dash power port.
Scrap the middle storage area between the seats for rear heat vents and 2 cup holders.
Replace the entire infotainment system for something that runs Android: totally customisable.

More customer oriented than a new model IMHO.

The comment earlier that the new model won't be based on the Mazda 3 because that's what underpins the CX-5 is flawed. Wheelbase is not the only criteria. The CX-5 is essentially a chopped Mazda 6 on steroids. A recent review by an Australian site provides a comparison between the two Mazdas.

So the new small Mazda SUV might quite easily be using the Mazda 3 platform.
