What have you done to your Mazda5 today?

167k on my 06 I meant to say the lateral link bushings, not the control arms. Its easier to replace the whole arm, rather than try to source new rubbers for the old ones.

Rear shocks and rsb end links at 87,000 on my '12 sport. Front motor mount, new splash guard and another trans fluid change tomorrow perhaps.

How often are you doing the trans fluid change?

Were the rear shocks and front motor mount done, as they had worn out?

As it turns out I will be replacing the control arm bushings as well. When I had a replacement rear tire mounted I had the guys look at the bushings as well. Sort of torn on whether it is smartest to do the lateral links AND the bushings on the control arms at once. Now that I type it out I'm not so torn lol gonna be a big PITA though...

Installed a curt roof basket w/extension on my 5 with one bars. It is necessary to trim a hair over half an inch from the bracket.

Rear control arm bushings are in fact a gigantic pain in the ass. Got the passenger side apart, waiting for my dad to bring me his shop press soi I can get the old bushing out. Bushing was so bad that the metal insert FELL out when I dropped the control arm. That just might be contributing to uneven tire wear :p lateral links, by comparison, are a walk in the park. The rubber on both of those was shot to hell as well.

Was looking at radar detectors and decided to see if my Escort 8500 X50 still worked since I put it away because it gave me a service required error about 4 years ago. Plugged it in to test, starts up and works right away. I hate radar detectors. Nevertheless I hardwired it in and need to pickup a Blendmount for it now.

Got the press, old bushing is out. Gonna have to get creative putting the new one in as I don't have the correct arbor to drive such a weird shape. Now of course they are calling for rain tomorrow, this may get entertaining as my dd is sitting on jackstands with no rear suspension right now.

Picked up some LEDs to start the ambient lighting project for the kids. I tried out a lot of positions, and it seem like I will end up mounting them inside the dome light, to either side of the factory bulb.

Also picked up 2.1 amp 12V USB outlets and a 110 volt inverter. Not sure where these are going yet. I thought about replacing the 2nd row tray and mounting them there but it's too close to the cup holders and wet beverage spills. Next up was the back of the center console but it was too hard to see and too close to wet slushy feet in the winter. Best candidate seems to be the 3rd row cup holders.

Finally got around to working on quieting the MZ5. Laid down one layer of foil backed sound damping on the 3rd row floor and spare tire well and 3 layers on the rear wheel wells. Also used a cotton based insulation to fill all the cavities back there. Everything came apart easily which made things nice. 3rd row was heavier than I thought it was going to be. A lot of sharp metal for anyone thinking of doing this.

The rear speaker setup is terrible, looks to be a plate bolted in hanging in space with the speaker then bolted to it. no enclosure or baffle of any sort so I used the insulation to pack the area behind the speaker and around it. Small gain in midrange sound quality, no gain in bass region.

Took the car for a drive and from the driver's seat things seem a lot different. Some quick observations:

I cannot hear the exhaust at all now. This used to be a small braaap at startup, a light tone on accel, and a slight booming on the highway at torque converter lockup in 5th. Can't hear any of this now.

No tire noise from the rear makes it up front, which makes the front tires seem all that much louder. I will pull the fender liners and run 3-4 layers of damping on the backside of them tomorrow.

Without the white noise coming from the 3rd row, I hear wind whistle coming from the rear sliding doors.

That's it for now. I'll update this once I get a chance to ride in the 2nd or 3rd row.

Tinted all of the windows behind the front row with 20%. Now my gear will be less visible, and the interior should be cooler. I might tint the front-row side windows with 35%, but I want be sure that my night vision won't be negatively affected. Might also add a tint strip to the top of the windshield (I'm surprised that it isn't a standard feature).

Edit: Finished off the front-row windows with 35%. Nice.

After a marathon wrenching session, the rear suspensionis back together and quiet as a church. For any of you getting ready DIY this one you will need the following: a 2 1/4 " spindle socket for your shop press to drive in the new bushing, a shop press of some kind, without it this job is impossible. LOTS of patience, especially during reassembly of the trailing arm. A pair of shop jacks will help a great deal but isn't essential. Defineately adding this one to my list of jobs I dont want to do again.

Got to sit in the 3rd row today, it is a lot better back there. Oddly you can hear the front tires over the rear tires now.

Pulled the center console cup holder and power/line-in panels. When the car gets back home will wire in the 4-port USB charger and get started on the 2nd row ambient lighting. I am on the fence about adding this to the 3rd row as well.

What say you all, add ambient lighting to 2nd row only or 2nd and 3rd row?

Took my wife and my two youngest to the airport for an overseas trip. That's a Curt basket. It handled all that bulk with no problem. Inside is 3 more pieces of luggage and 3 carry-ons. I didn't hear anything on the way to the airport but it was pretty loud on the way home.

I saw a post on that somewhere! The guy put LEDs in the rear most plastic and in the headliner. Came out pretty sweet.

I only plan on doing footwell lighting for front and second row. The third row stays folded down most of the time so its unnecessary IMO.
