How much is your commute costing you?

How much does your commute make you?
I have always commuted in order to make money. I had one job where I drove for a living. I was a field service tech and drove to between 4 and 7 customers a day. I got to explore, visit nice little towns, meet people and make money. All good stuff.
Get a good car or motorcycle, Vary the route from time to time, Get a good sound system, listen to books on CD, pray, enjoy.

True, you have to go where you need to go.

My point wasn't that commuting is bad. It was that the more efficiently it is done, the more money is left over to save for other purposes.

And the CX-5 is good at this.

341 miles over four days commute to work costs me 56.22 in diesel fuel.Time taken each day travelling is 1hr 50 in total

Used to be 51 miles each way and about 1 hour commute, and cost between $9-10 a day in gas.

Now it's about 23 miles each way with a 30 minute commute and costs in the $4-5 range. Plus I make more at this job.

I have never been tempted to ignore the facts about long commutes, the impact goes beyond money (and the money wasted is horrific). It has always been my opinion that mega commutes are a big waste of time and money plus have terrible impact on personal health and the environment.

btw - I have a extra car just for commuting, with HOV lane access while driving solo in California (has HOV white stickers like Tesla) when needed, runs on compressed natural gas currently at $2.54 gallon, gets consistent 34 mpg. It's cheap, it's ugly, it's boring, it's reliable, it's handy during commute hours since it saves significant time (Honda Civic GX), and the math related to cost is pretty good too.

My commutes in my lifetime have been in the range of 3 miles minimum to 18 miles maximum, one way. Some of those commutes have been counter-commutes allowing speeds of 80 mph on regular basis.

My current commute is 6.5 miles one way in moderate traffic, easy. I tend to use the CX-5 more for this commute that began recently when my office was moved, it's plenty economical, comfy, quiet, good stereo, good Bluetooth, and I like to sit up high in traffic.

I have an easy 45 mile-each way-commute. It is through rural Texas so the speed limits are mostly seventy and seventy five. Not great but I love driving and it allows us to live on the coast.

25 miles each way but time spent varies from 40 to 90 minutes each way depending on time of day. Thankfully I'm getting 30+ MPG on my tank. Once I got it up to 39MPG but I think I was cruising at 40MPH.

210 miles a week. $10 in tolls per week.
11,000 miles a year.
$520/year tolls
New CX5 = 28.2MPG average
Old Isuzu = 17.1MPG average
Gallon of Gas = $4.15

CX5 = $2,150
Isuzu = $3,200

Savings of $1,000 a year with the new car. I keep my car on average about 10 years. So I will save $10k with the CX5. Nice.
