Backed Into - Need New Bumper?

Someone backed into our parked CX-5 and didn't leave a note or anything - what a wonderful way to start a Monday morning. A part of their vehicle (probably a trailer hitch) punched a 2.5" x 2.5" hole in the textured black portion of the rear bumper (circled in red):

I'm wondering if it's worth going through my insurance and paying the $750 deductible. I found the following image that indicates that it may all be one expensive piece (that will need paint) that would cost way more than my deductible to replace. BUT, if the the black textured part can be replaced separately and doesn't need paint then I may do it myself for less than the deductible. Any guidance/advice?

One other possibility I was curious about was salvage parts. Does anyone have a source for used/salvage CX-5 parts besides ebay?

Can't tell from pic but it is possible that it can be
Repaired

Picture isn't of my car, just used as an illustration. I'll get pictures of the actual damage. The problem is that the damage is in the black textured plastic area. I'm not sure how repairable that might be or how possible it would be to match the plastic around it.

First off, the lower black portion does not come off separately. On this forum, I've seen examples of owners modifying the exhaust cutouts and the result looked OK in the pictures, so it may be possible for a skilled body shop to make the repair and refinish the black portion only. Only way to tell is to shop around.

Too nice of a car to do it cheap, make an insurance claim and pay the deductible, at least the repair will be warratied as long as you own the car. $750 is a deductible I've never seen what company is that?

That is kinda my thinking. First new car I've owned in several years and I want to keep babying it.

Now that I look the deductible is $500 (allstate). Biggest thing holding me back from filing a claim is the carfax, but then again I plan on keeping the car for the full warranty term of 7 years - that far down the road maybe the claim won't affect value so much.

I remember, when I had my 08' VW Rabbit, I have asked the body shop guy, to fill in the little bumper covers for me(the ones for towing). Most likely they can patch it up, but they may have to paint it, to look good.

If you have a good insurance agent, you can talk to him. He will tell you the pros and cons of insurance claim for the specific incident. These type of repairs usually don't make it onto Carfax.

You really should have $50 deductible. CX-5's are suffering cracked windshields for unknown reasons at $500 cost and so low deductible is highly recommended. That would have covered this incident too. Some states have $50 deductible for vandalism, if you could get it classified as such. If you could find out who hit you, the deductible would be $0.

I'll try giving the agent a call and post the results.

Here is a picture of the actual damage:

I had an 07 GTI that I had painted lowers on. That black textured plastic was hard to work with and get smooth enough to finish for paint. What might be harder is finding a paint or finish for the rear bumper that matches the rest of the black plastic on the CX-5.

You are mixing up comprehensive with collision coverage, not aware of any company offering $50 deductibles on collision and very rare on comprehensive. Usually the cost to buy down the deductible is not cost effective as just a few years w/o a claim and you saved your deductible in lower premium.

Depends on the state. Going to $50 deductible from $1000 deductible on comprehensive only raised my State Farm rates $40/yr. so it was a no brainer. I'm older so if you are young, probably more.

Yes, the black portion of the bumper is one big piece which includes the blue (assuming that is your color) and black.
And, yes, if you get this piece, it will need to be painted blue to match the rest of the car before it is installed.

I need to move to GA!

Actually, GA doesn't have mandatory coverage of windshield & that is why I purchased a $50 deductible. I know CO requires insurers cover windshields even if you have a large deductible. Everyone cracks a windshield almost every year in CO due to sanding of roads (their sand is crushed granite) so it makes sense to require insurance companies cover windshields for public safety. I had my windshield replaced four times in four years that I lived in Denver.

In my opinion, it doesn't matter the texture, just to be black. I had mine painted as well, the front and the GLI sides too. I have asked the body guy to plug those square covers for the towing hook, for a smoother look.

I got an estimate from a local well-rated body shop for $677 for a new bumper cover. My deductible is $500 so that raises a few questions:

1. Is a body shop required to indicate that they made a repair? I.e. will the repair show up on a Carfax or Autocheck if I don't go through my insurance?
2. Is my insurance rate likely to go up if I make a relatively small claim such as this? Is so it may not be worth saving $177 by going through Allstate.
