I stopped and looked at it for a guy on fb. the outside is nice, very nice. But1) the vvt chain moves a good inch when warm 2)smoking turbo (they said they just replaced it and if I knew anything about turbos I would know all new turbos do that)<<<I drove up in my speed3.. 3) only 2wd for some reason (ask #1) 4) no internals but definite evidence of dp with stripped bolts on the turbo. spliced boost tubes and wires in engine bay. broken nipple on ebcs. had suspension at one point as the fenders are tore up from rubbing. stock suspension on there is blown. Sorry to ruin your parade. I gave that same list to them and they said they would fix it all but then they would have to ask 14k for it and I turned to the guy I was there with and said walk away. Even though its hard to say no to a red ms6 they are sexy! Also couldn't hold fuel pressure at WOT as I took my dashhawk with me

They gave me some numbers on the MS6, I don't really like them.

I'll probably just stick with the devil I know an attempt to (re)build the MSP over the winter.

As far as the turbo goes, it could be oil still burning off of the cat or the muffler depending on the severity of the failure. Either way I would ask for documentation of replacment.

basic question is a GT2871R too much for a MSP with a goal of about 225ish whp? I'm finding the answer is yes after going to Garrett's website.

Yeah I was going to direct you to Garrett's (Honeywell) website as a quick crash course. The easiest thing to remember is pressure is irrelevant if the mass flow rate of air is unknown. Smaller turbos require higher pressures to flow more air and basic thermodynamics says higher pressure and constant area means higher temperatures. Large turbos require less pressure and therefore have lower intake air temperatures for a given mass flow rate of air but their larger turbines require more energy to build speed. Energy comes from exhaust gas velocity and higher engine speed means higher exhaust gas velocity. This is why largers turbos have "lag."

A GT2871R IS probably a little much for 225 WHP. You could use it but you'd be running low levels of boost, probably 6-8 psi, and the large size would induce some noticeable lag. For 225 whp you're probably best sticking with the stock GT2554R and running 12-14 psi. My old P5 at it's peak with just about every bolt-on known to MSP's was putting down 215 WHP and 220 WTQ at 10 psi with a modified stock turbo (think GT2554R with GT28RS turbine and compressor). You could jump up to a GT28RS at 8-10 psi for lower intake air temperatures but again there will be some additional lag.

K04 doesn't bolt to the stock exhaust manifold but any "T2" series flanged turbo will (GT2554R, GT28RS, GT2871R, GT3076R, etc.). I'd stick with the stock GT2554R before recommending a K04 anyway.

Trying to avoid lag, I was thinking a disco potato would be better but even on Garrett's website they rate it at 250hp +.

I think I'll stick with stock and If I feel it's maxed out and I want more I can always go bigger later.

Nate, as Jon stated you can run the stock turbo and achieve the 225 WHP, I made 215 running running 5-7 PSI.....easily...

Is that with your Disco Potato though? That would make much more sense. I thought you meant on your stock turbo.

mine is @ 185ish on 10 PSI, been thinking about taking it to Smokey's next year and see what the tune is like, maybe get a bit more out of it
